saving a mk1 which lost a battle with a armco barrier ( 360 spin)

Post by mk1 dal »

hi , i have saved a few mk1s now and love these cars to bits fantastic fun to drive and always bring a smile to my face when driving them . this car was smashed up after the peaks run which i organize with bill hulme on the mk1 club site . this is the aftermath of hitting diesel coming off a round about on the m60 ( very lucky Denis who was driving the car was unhurt )

Image

Image

she had very bad hits but no chassis damage , i decided to buy the car off Denis to restore , she was to good to scrap and rust free and mint prior to the accident with the previous lady owner had it 18 years from new . she needed 2 new wings , slam panel , bumper , head light , bonnet , inner wing and head light mounting panel , rear quarter panel , back light and rear bumper with crash bar . she needed a lot off parts the biggest problem being the rear quarter . has luck would have it a fully restored car with new rear quarters fitted had sadly caught fire and was being scraped ( far to good to break but had already fully striped when i got to it ) . i managed to get 2 as new wings ,full rear panel , slam panel , and lights for 100 pounds :)

parts cut out of donor car

Image

the front was done first on the car ,it had inner panel damage so this was cut out .

Image

the replacement part where carefully measured and welded in

Image

Image

then the new wings and bonnet where trial fitted for the shut lines .

Image

Image

Image

happy with the front it was time to sort the rear out .

this was after i gave it a good bash to get the boot to shut .

Image

Image

all this damaged needed to be cut out , i carefully removed the rear quarter .

Image

Image

Image

Image

to fit the rear panel i decided to join it at the fuel cap edge as its the shortest distance to weld , this was a bit of a sod but is more than doable if you take your time .

Image

welded in and spot welded around the rest of the panel .

Image

Image

Image

then filled and painted

Image

Image

Image

i decided to change the white from 043 to 040 and two tone the with gray 167 so fully painted the car .

Image

Image

2 tone paint just done

Image

and car as she is now

@mk1dal - re pic, I recognise that setting :-), that crinkly hill, is it called "Parkhouse Hill" / "Chrome Hill"? Love that whole area. One never-forgotten drive was Longnor to Oncote to Alton in my mk1a in 1986. :) :) :)

What a fine thing to see it rescued like that. Full credit to our man who should be justly proud.

Commendable work. VIC/VOSA/whatever inspection lined up? Hope the examiner appreciates the care that goes into saving these.

Gary, amazing job on the MR2. I was following the thread on the mk1club forum. Still can't believe you even attempted to fix it let alone get it back to that standard. You know 2 tone is the best!

Also, the white over black car is mine :) More pics in the garage.

hi , i do know what you mean  , that weld wont crack end off , it had a self adhesive purging strip at the back before it was welded and a 1mm weld gap for prep , even though the weld was ground off it still has the same depth of clean weld on the inside as the outside did pryor to grinding off. I have 23 years experience in fabricating ( advanced sheet metal ,coded welder and plater welder . ) and this repair was very easy to do compared to my day job , so i know the repair is 100% safe and only panel damage , it doesn't need a inspection :D . ps, do you own a super edition you lucky sod .
