Strange clutch problem

Post by Andy Smith »

HI

I recently had the clutch replaced on my 91 NA, when i got it back the biting point was quite near the floor... now several months later the biting point is right at the top of the pedel and has almost gone, it now slips in gear as well. Any ideas whats going on

Thanks, Andy

Either you`ve done some serious mileage or you`re constantly doing burn-outs.... Not good as your clutch sounds knackered..have you also noticed that the pedal feel is heavier now than it was when first installed??

Hi Alan,

Not too sure as this is the first time I`ve heard it happening.

A new clutch should give you the following ...

Lighter pedal feel (much lighter if you old clutch was very worn)
Very low biting point
No slipping...

If you had the work done at a garage then take it back as the current symptoms you have belong to a worn clutch/ill fitted one and there is no way you can wear you clutch out in 800miles.

BTW the light and spring pedal feel that you have now, it should be considerably lighter than before the clutch change... is this so??

Also, whoever changed the clutch, did they also change the pressure plate and bearing ???

cud be that or the clucth may just be beding in ! the key when the clucth is slipping is not to give more revs as i say it may be beding in but it shudn't take that long to bed in 8)

yeah is was a lot lighter and had a nice low biting point when i first got it back, the biting point has gradualy got higher and higher over the last 2 months and is now almost not there at all.

They did fit a complete clutch kit, but i`m guessing it was a cheapy pattern part one. i`m going to take it back next week and see what they say.. it has a 12000 mile / 1 year warrenty. so they should replace it

Thanks for your help

Andy, get them to fit a pukka MrT clutch - they're not expensive - a turbo one was about £100 for friction plate, pressure plate and new throw out bearing so a NA one should be much cheaper. A MrT one should last a good bit longer than 800 miles too ;)
