Mk1 crankshaft pulleys (big picture files - sorry)

Post by James_Ward »

Typical.... thought to myself "just quickly change the cambelt on the engine, then I can put it back in the car today".... not bloody likely.

Was changing the cambelt, noticed the small pulley on the crankshaft had about 5 degrees of free rotation on the shaft, on closer insepction the woodruff key was chewed up and the also the slot on both pulleys but worse the keyway in the crankshaft

So, does anyone have the small crank pulley for the cambelt they want to sell me? Got a new alternator belt crank pulley already (thanks Kev...)

More importantly - can I get the crank fixed if the keyway is worn? Can I get it machined out to a bigger size and fit a wider key? Will I have to have the pulleys machined to match?

Cheers in advance :)

no problem leave it with me i know i have the top pulleys and am pretty sure i have the bottom as well.yours for the cost of postage.the key way in the crank doesn`t look that bad so you might get away with it. what happened to cause all this?

looks like the crank end bolt has been lose at some time, if you ask me. The keyway in the crank looks alright from that photo, not to bad anyway. The alternator pulley has had it, its a shame they locate on such a small portion of the key.
Not to bad James, she'll live :)

Cheers Kev you are a star. I only need the small pulley which the cam timing belt goes on, you've already sold me the large crank pulley! Also if you have a spare woodruff key would be v. helpful....

This is actually a new engine for me, I pulled it out of a free car I was given (well... I had to go and get it). I ran it briefly before I took it out as well.... sounded ok.... :? It is going into my project car to replace the engine with the blown cylinder head gasket.

I agree the pulleys are shagged, the woodruff key looks like a piece of chewed chewing gum! The end bolt was done up though and I had to use the big breaker bar to get it off so it couldn't have been that loose.... Apparently the engine was a recon one and has only done about 10K miles (albeit about 4 years ago), perhaps when they re-assembled it they used a worn key with some play, over time the small play wore itself into a big play IUSWIM....

To be honest it's a bad design, both pulleys share the same key and hence only have half the key length to hold them in place.
