[Mk2] [NA] N00B questions!

Post by S7ARBVCK »

Hey, all,

I'm new here! I've just bought a 1999 T reg, Rev 5 UK MR2 with 73k miles on the clock. It was pretty cheap, but in remarkably good condition with no rust anywhere (including under the car), and an interior which looks brand new.

Unfortunately, finding a car in this condition has come with some compromises, namely the lack of aircon and cruise control.

So, my first questions are pretty simple - how easy (or otherwise) is it to fit these facilities? Is it the case that the pipework for the heating system is the same, so all I need is a compressor and the control panel, and I'm good to go, or is there a lot more to it? Same question with cruise, really?

Also - if any of you have any recommendations of someone in Surrey who could do this work, I'd really like their contact details.

Cheers! :)

Hello fella and welcome both to the site and 2 ownership... fantastic cars.
Never heard this query as most are interested in taking them out not putting in (there's a lot of weight there for such luxury) but I'd say Rogue would be your best bet. Affiliates here.
Do you really need them though? Money could go on other mods or service bits... cambelt been done recently? Should be every 60k or 5 yrs. How about re undersealing to keep it rust free another 10 yrs?
Anyway well done on the car... hope you'll love it like I love mine.

First off, welcome :thumleft:

Air- con can be retrofitted but it cost ALOT. My plan would be to drive your one around for a while ( you dont really need it in winter) Then if you really must have it go for a JDM (Japanese version) MR2 as all Japanese ones had it as standard.
Maybe even go for a turbo if you feel so inclined :)

Cruise control - I've only really seen them on early JDM models and Most USDM (Amercan version) You would need an ECU which has had CC fitted.

My advice is to speak to RogueMotorsport for the full picture

Thanks, fellas! This is actually my second MR2 - had a 1990 G-Limited in about 1997. I bought this one as a big modifier, and the principal motivation was getting one with a pukka, rust free chassis, which I'm pleased to say I have. That being the case, don't really want to swap it out any time soon - would sooner do the mods, tbh.

My plan is to fit some kind of V6 (or V8, if I can find someone to undertake the work), which is why I didn't buy a turbo in the first place. I realise I'm going to have to replace the gear-box too, but I've heard I can get a turbo box for around £300, so not too worried. :)

I'll check out RogueMotorsport - thanks for the tip! :)

The NA gearbox will work fine with the V6. I ran mine around for about 2 years like that with no problems. The only advantage with the turbo box is the LSD, plus different ratios which can be considered either an advantage or disadvantage depending on your viewpoint.

Retrofitting air con would be a complete ball ache. Climate control even more hassle, especially as there are no wiring diagrams for the latter.

What, so the wiring is the issue? TBH, I could probably live without the cruise, but it gets pretty hot during the summer, and I like my cool air! :-P

There are some cheap after market cruise control kits, Air con would be a nightmare, there are a lot of parts and then the electronic control aswell as you need water temperature sensors (air con turns off if the engine is running to hot), air temperature sensors (air con turns off if the outside air is to cold) and a whole lot more.
