[Mk2] [Turbo] changed the dizzy and the battery went flat whilst driving...

Post by djpkins »

I changed the dizzy, it was a leaky o-ring that prompted the swap, and as i had a newer dizzy with a brand new o-ring on it...I just changed the lot.
The only wires I unplugged were the dizzy plug (seemingly all wires intact) and the king lead...I have maybe suspected that I have an electrical/charging issue cos the revs dip when voltage is applied from brakes/lights...the dizzy was marked up and I think it only goes on one way doesn't it?

Ddizzy will only go in 1 way as for the charging it wont have anything to do the the dizzy or its wiring.

Do you have a aftermarket volt meter in car? If no,t attach a multimeter to somewhere inside the car and go for a long'i shdrive to see if its charging. There is a wire that goes from alternator to engine fuse box which can break and then you can have intermitant charging like it had.

Drove ok until engine bay got warm/hot and then the charging dropped off.

A wire from alt to fuse box sounds likely as undoing the dizzy cap bolts with my socketdriver thing seems to snag on a wire...infact I knew that i had gotten in a bit of a tangle there and was about to check it out a bit ...but lost daylight...nice one, I'm quietly confident that this is the culprit :thumleft: :thumleft: :thumleft:

can't really see any vunerable looking wires that could've been snagged.
voltage across the terminals...

standing idle...12.63v

running...11.47v fluctuating down.

does this mean a new alternator or is there any chance of it being an earth strap or similar wiring issue?

It's not charging at all so check the alternator multi plug and there should be a wire bolted on a little post on the alternator as well. I've had the nuts work loose on one of these before. :thumleft:

yea double check plug on the alt, mine had a habit of dropping out just enough to stop charge but looked connected

i put it back in with some silicone around it..

the plug also looked like it had been adhered with something and was a xxxx to get out...i have taken it off...fk me there is a lot of oil around that area...old and fresh...difficult to see but it look like it's gathering or coming from the head gasket above the alt...I have been told there is a 120 amp fuse somewhere in the frunk that could be blown...any ideas on that one?
Alt feels fine , covered in oily crap though....before taking it off I connected a cable from the alt earth to the battery earth to see if it improved the voltage drop...it didn't...and I have deffo had a low electrolite level wich may point towards the regulator??

oil dripping onto the alternator kills them pretty quick...

i have not seen a 120 fuse in the frunk

Reckon so too mate...the fuse is on the wiring diagram, right after the battery, but surely if that was blown, the battery wouldn't power nowt.

if its on the main line in then nothing would work...

you might as well change it at this point if you have another around?

2 fuses. Check 7.5amp alt fuse in front. Check wiring from plug to rear fuse box.

Check the 3 pin plug on the alternator, should have voltage on all 3, 2 at whatever the battery voltage is and one slightly below. With the engine off but ignition on. My guess would be the black and yellow alternator exciter wire being bust.
