[Mk2] [Turbo] Steering Vibration and offset fixed! (proper alignment laser 4 wheel with printo

Post by nickg07 »

Hi guys so i got an MR2 turbo and didnt notice that the steering wheel vibrated at 80-90mph (which isnt an easy test on a test drive) but also the steering weel was offset by maybe a couple of degrees so i had to hold it left to get the car going straight! Oh Oh!

Well i replaced the NS sticky caliper and hose
Wheels balanced, twice
Wheel alignment check, twice
new wheels/part worn tyres just to see if it was the old rims

Problem remained.

Took the car to Drury Road garage in Oldham/Manchester for a alignment check and wheel balancing.

They did the alignmen first and found out the rear right was actually off creating an negative thrust angle:( Thanksfully they sorted that! They also did the wheel balancing with the wheels on the car too. And thankfully the steering vibration is completely dialled out! Im so happy!

This is the before/after print out. I tried to get them to use the Dino base settings but the front hasnt got adjustable camber so they couldnt do much with that but the change to the rears is pretty huge! Not bad for a car on completely standard suspension components right?

You can get camber bolts for the front for around 20 quid if you want to from here if you require more adjustment.

Also how much was the alignment and on vehicle wheel balance if you dont mind me asking?

Hi thanks id seen some crash bolts on various websites to help but really the camper is very close. id consider getting adjustable caster arms to dial that in a bit.

The total bill was £130 but the adjustment required some heat and work to free up the rear toe adjusted which added to the time and cost.

Its not cheap but i mean you can pay kwik fit less to do not even a quarter of the same job. you can't put too much of a price on something that has relieved so much frustration. Plus the car will probably eat less tyres and be more pleasurable to drive.

good news, wouldnt have thought an alignment issue could have caused a steering wheel vibration, might have to give them a try and see if mine is the same issue

Hi just to be clear, the alignment just centered out my steering wheel and got all my wheels pointing the same way.

it was the higher quality balancing they also did for me with the special adapter after i told them about the vibrations and that id had the problem still after getting it balanced elsewhere. the vibration came more on sllightly curved motorway so important thinking the alignment exposed the wheel and sorting both resolved the.prob.

If you were to go and just check your align its about 30+Vat. its only if you want changes done like me it costs another 30.

Whilst on-car balancing is great in curing some vibration issues, you do need to be careful that when you take the wheels off that you put them back on again in exactly the same orientation.
