Idle speed? tick-over cut out.

Post by Boudicca »

Hi All,
Car is:
MR2 MK2 Rev1 - 3S-GE na.

I have a Idle speed problem.

When car is cold starts fine and tick-over 1000-1100.
Then when the car is half way between cold and normal running temp,
it cuts out when left to idle. When I pull up at the lights the revs drops to nothing and car cuts out. Then as the car get warmer and I pull up the revs drop to nearly dying and then idles roughly. Once the car is at normal running temp the idle appears batter - fluctuating between 800-1000. but not cutting out.

I've checked for Air leaks and found none.
I've checked for error codes and found none.

Any help or advise please.

most likely your ISCV needs cleaning out.

there is a thread on here which details the procedure, but roughly

- remove throttle body bolts
- carefully unclip the coolant pipes (one on side one below)
- unplug all connectors
- remove throttle body
- undo 4 scres on the bottom of it holding the ISCV unit on

now you can thoroughly clean the throttle body, butterfly, internal tubes, and the ISCV sensor. Use brake cleaner or carb cleaner to get all the muck off.

Once all clean make sure the iscv flap moves freely, it should be 1/3rd open without power going to it. put a drop of light bicycle / machine oil on the iscv flap and work it in by moving the flap back and forth.

fully clean up, reassemble, making sure you put the little rubber gasket (between iscv and throttle housing) back and refit to car.

after car run for a few mins, stop and let it cool, then top up the coolant as you will have lost a tiny amount when you took the pipes off.

No, you shouldn't need any new gaskets.

Just one other point. When you have the ISCV off, the socket that connects to the wiring loom only has 2 connections on it. If you have a 12v battery handy, connect it up one way and then the other, to switch the valve fully open and closed. It should help you a little when you're cleaning it out and also proves that it is opening and closing fully once you're happy that you've cleaned it. Saves finding out that it still isn't working correctly once you've re-assembled it all :eye:

one more thing,

although you dont need to buy any new gaskets, when you get the rubber one off (between iscv and throttlebody) clean it up carefully and just before you screw it back togther, smear it with a little silicone "instant" gasket stuff :thumleft:

Thanks Gav and Slarty

One more thing:

The engine has a Ecotek CB-26P (clean burn technology) fitted
ecotekplc.com/fitting_instructions.htm

could this be part of the problem?

sorry to keep bugging you guys.

Thank you in advance

it could very well be. I didnt know what it was so did a google on it, seem like a snake-oil device to me. Personally I would ditch the ecotek thing for the following reasons:

1) do you really want a cheap plastic valve letting air into the inlet, which is attached to the brake servo line?

2) it probably doesn't do anything

3) the ACIS system on the 3sge does this in a better way anyway, altering port length at 5k rpm +

4) is most likely screwing with the fuel mix as its letting in air after the TPS, which calibrates the fuel injection system for any given throttle valve position

5) its a cheap plastic valve on on your brake line (i said it again1 as i think its important)

Guys thanks for the advice - I really appreciate it.

NOW I have a new problem - * see other thread
