Power Steering heavy

Post by Johnr32 »

I have found that the power steering very heavy when driving very slowly, it seems to happen only after a few attempts to park for some strange reason, so doesnt happen if I park in one attempt. After I drive off its fine again and back to normal?

The fluid is fine so not sure what it can be?

The power steering is activated via a ring passing through a sensor on the steering wheel boss, it is also activated by driving over 10mph. If you have an aftermarket wheel then it may not have this ring, this is why it's turning off when you are parking, as you're driving at less than 10mph and the sensor isn't triggered.

Do a search on the forum and you'll find a few topics about this very image.

You can fix the problem, in another topic someone managed to attach something that would pass through the sensor.

Strange but shouldnt it always be heavy? its only sometimes (rarely) heavy when doing parking maneuvers.

No, because the power steering also comes on when you are travelling above about 10mph. Once your speed drops below this e.g. When you are parking, it will turn off after approx 30 seconds. The power steering also automatically comes on for a few seconds when you start the car.
