Engine Oil Advice

Post by MattLG »

I hear all kinds of advice from different people about whether mineral or synthetic oil is best for MK1s. So, what is the difference? what are the plus points and bad points of each. Also, what do the two numbers mean in 10W40?

I dont know which oil you should use.

But the 10w40 is the viscosity of the oil when cold and when at operating temperature. the lower each number, the thinner the oil is at that temperature.

So 0w40 is thinner when cold that 10w40, but the same at operating temperature.

Cheers,

Paul.

I don't know of anyone who uses mineral oil in a modern (early 80's and onwards) engine, other than perhaps during running in.

Just use a synth of at least 10w-40. I think a 15w-60 would be the best bet really.

Don't bother with 0w-30s and the like as it will just burn it off.

Semi-synth would be fine too in all honesty.

For my SC i tended to only use fully synth.

Matt, I tend to use magnatec. Every car shop has it and when I took my camcovers off last summer for a reshim, everything in there looked like new, so it must be doing something right.

Synthetics tend to be better in withstanding high temperatures (ie on a turbo) and can extend oil change intervals. A semi synthetic should be fine for a Mk1(provided that you change it often enough), and as already mentioned something like a 10w40 would be ok. Any thiner you and could start burning it off quite easilly (especially if you've got a high milage engine).
