I'm looking at getting my first MR2 turbo and have a question about the revisions.
Are the updates for the Rev3 worth holding out for as there are far more 1 and 2s on the market.
I know they have revised suspension, more power and a 'better' engine management system but can you notice the difference day to day?
Cheers.

Hi mate, rev3+ Turbo all the way
Rev3 has a stronger headgasket (metal) 245bhp as opposed to 220 on rev 1/2. No AFM, which allows you to run an atmos bov without the poor running/stalling issues.
Bigger injectors on rev 3. 540cc, rev 1/2 440cc. Run higher boost also.

turbo, ecu, sensible oil filter location, etc etc...
however, rev2 with a steel headgasket and forgies does it for me.

Re: Rev3 much better than 1/2?
I think turbo's are much better than v6's
rev3+ FTW by the way

Re: Rev3 much better than 1/2?
Well that was nice and straight forward! Looks like it's worth holding out for a 3+
Re: Rev3 much better than 1/2?
^^ even bigger can...
Re: Rev3 much better than 1/2?
A nicely sorted R1/2 is just as good as a R3+
If I had a choice, I'd just go for the better car

Re: Rev3 much better than 1/2?
I much prefer the styling on the earlier cars...
Re: Rev3 much better than 1/2?
It depends on what you want to do with the car, its cheaper and easier to tune a Rev 3, to say 300bhp, if you want much more its not going to make much difference what Rev you start with.
In addition to all the other benifits head/ cam design is much better on rev 3
Saying that the Rev 2's have the strongest block (juat added that for worm can openage )
A well sorted & looked after Rev 2 would IMHO be a much better bet than a "well used" Rev 3

oi oi oi - what about a supercharged V6

...pff, rotrex'd, forged red top FTW!
I'd just say buy the best car you can find. A well looked after car with a gen 2 would be worth more to me then a car woth a gen 3 fitted which was never looked after.
...rev 1/2 rear styling all the way!!!! But that's all in the beauty of the beholder. I'm worrying now when I change mine (inevitable) that there'll be none left without the mish-mash of rear lights.
post subject
i,ll stick with my rev 2....although i,ve got a spare rev 3 engine in the shed

Can you tell the difference in drivability (smoothness etc) between the afm and map based cars?

Yeah, you can. Boost control is more progressive in the rev3+ and I seem to remember they achieve better fuel economy.

Re: Rev3 much better than 1/2?
Condition is absolutely everything with these cars as they're all ancient.
Buy a duffer and it will bleed your bank balance dry.
As far as on the road difference between the 2-5 revisions hardly anything IMO.

Re: Rev3 much better than 1/2?
I think the biggest sticking point for me will be that I want a totally standard car. I'm quite happy with 240bhp, I'd probably add a bigger side mount IC but nothing else. I'd much rather it was reliable, got plenty of unreliable toys bleeding me dry!
Just need to shift my MX5 now, only bought it as a stop gap after my FD3S and so far it's lasted a month before I got bored wishing it could pull the skin of a rice pudding.

Re: Rev3 much better than 1/2?
after having 2 rev 2's tubbys and a rev 3 turbo i'd say there wasnt that much in it really, and the thing about the rev 2's now the good ones are good ones if you know what I mean, well kept looked after etc, as most of the ones that havent been looked after will be either dead or obviously dieing.
