Greetings,
I've ben searching the board for information on mk1 oil filters.
Mr T just sold me a 90915-YZZJ1 which from my search results state at least one person on the board is using, yet the box states:
"Engine Application: A series (exc. 4A-G series)". I took it back and pointed this out to Toyota but they said that was what they had returned to them when they looked the part up from my reg number.
The forum states I should be using a 90915-YZZJ2.
Is the filter I have one I should be using, as someone else is apparently using it on their 4A-GE with no apparent drawback?

J2 is the correct one

The original number for a 1b was 90915-03004, substituted by 90915-10002 which you'll find it's been superceded by 90915-YZZJ2

Re: Yet another dumb oil filter question
A few weeks back, I ordered a new oilfilter for my 1986 AW11, and the dealer also stated this partnumber on the bill. (90915-YZZJ1)
Fits fine, works fine.
Fits fine, works fine.
Re: Yet another dumb oil filter question
If I remember correctly the J1 part is the Mk1a part and the J2 part is the Mk1b (actually its probably mroe related to engine year than model but I'll stick with the differentation if you don't mind). The former is a short stubby filter whilst the latter is about 1.5 times the length. Both will fit however I was recommended the J2 part over the J1 part. The J2 is a fairly standard part that fits other vehicles as well.

Re: Yet another dumb oil filter question
Oil filters for the MK1 are the same ones the 3SGTE ues and a load of other Toyotas..
Most people pick the longer one for turbos and SC's, but I think either is fine in all honesty.
I just go in the Toyota dealer with my chassis number and do it that way. [+]
