[Mk2] [Turbo] 3SGTE to 5SGTE 2.2Ltr QUESTIONS PLEASE HELP???

Post by W88NEE »

Hi everyone,

I am part way through my forged build and am just curious to see if anyone has done this conversion and what I need to consider regarding changing the 3SGTE crank for a Camry 2.2 5SFE crank shaft.

Is it a simple exchange or does the 5SFE crank need work to get it to fit, also do you need different connecting rods a I have Eagle rods already on order along with my CP 86.5mm pistons.

How does this new crank effect driveability, power, torque acceleration etc.

I have had a search but am not coming up woth much info. Thanks very much.

most folks considering this would use the 5S block as it's a bit stronger. post 98 are apparently the best ones to use. If you head over to www.mr2oc.com -< you'll need to register there but it has a wealth of info on this very topic

what you have planned if i remember correctly you need to do the following....

have the rod journals on the 5sfe crank offset ground to suit the 3sgte rods, and custom pistons with a higher set gudgeon pin, cp make them. you also need to use either a 5sfe flywheel or im pretty sure you can modify the holes in the 3sgte flywheels to suit the crank.

As stated, realy you want a 2.2 5sgte 98+ camry block, awesome :) tho even more work to fit with them having no knock sensor hole or bolts/holes for alternator brackets etc but worth the work

Great stuff, well I think I might start a project build as the block has come through.

Should be mighty torquey with the 3076 GTX going on and chargecooler shortening the air flow.

Thanks for the info.
Was MR2Turbo1991, but now changed name.

86.5 mm pistons are too small

Hi all. I am looking for one of these 98+ blocks.

Can someone tell me if there is a surefire way to tell if a car is fitted with the stronger 98+ block. Is it just a case of finding a car with date of first registration in the year 1998 or newer?

I'm just worried about the distinction between date of first registration as stated in the log book and the actual date of manufacture.

Is there a easy way to tell from the VIN or from visually looking at the car?

Thanks in advance :thumleft:
