[Mk2] [NA] How to Test Front lower Ball Joints?

Post by AussieMR2 »

Hi, I was replacing my brakes on Saturday and when I jacked up the front end I can move hub left and right quite a bit and it is the lower ball joint on both sides that is moving, is this normal when it is jacked up?
I also have a lot of wear on inside of both front tyres so am suspicious of the joints
I replaced them about 5 years ago and dont do a lot of driving but it is lowered quite a bit on stiff springs

What is the most reliable way to test the joints?

surely the only movement on the front wheels as the track of the steering, and movement you can do easily by hand has to be worn components (unless its the movement of the slight play in the steering rack or the steering lock was on and knocking on that)

twisting the wheel left and right about the hub tests the track-rod ends - you need to ask someone to hold the steering wheel solid, as the wheel lock allows a lot of movement.

Rocking the wheel top/bottom about the hub tests the wheel bearing.

Ball joints - These pin the bottom of the hub in a fixed location. Test by push/pulling the wheel in and out (after verifying the bearing is OK) I've often seen MOT testers lever the joint with a big screwdriver to check for motion.
