Redex!! To use or not to use??

Post by stevened »

Is it worth using on a 1991 MK2 Rev 1 NA? Anyone had any good or bad info about using Redex petrol additive? Cheers folks

mine gets a half bottle in the tank every other month with a full fill up. i prefer to use the fuel system cleaner rather than the injector cleaner.

dont know whether it actually does anything, but it certainly hasnt broken anything and my emmissions were excellent at the MOT :)

I have never known it to do any harm to an engine.
Have to admit I have never seen any real benefits from it either.
I do rate 10K boost though. That has always made the car run smoother.

Modern fuels contain the necesary detergents to clean injectors anyway.

I use a shot of Redex 2 or 3 times a year. The biggest difference I find is when you buy a car and the pervious person never took care of it, Redex has made the most difference, but afterwise I find it still justifies a shot of it every 6 months at least.

...see I keep a log of my fuel useage usually and I firmly believe there are sometimes just too much additives in some fuel these days. I usually try and avoid those options as they never benefit much if you already have a clean fuel regime.

A shot of Redex cleaner every 6 months never hurt anything for me -most modern "cleaner" fuels are pitched at folk who just stuck the cheap crud in them beforehand, another way of coaxing folk into a sale rather than those who wil feel any benefit.

Odd outlook on it but OK.

I think you're missing the point that constant use of fuels with additives(i.e. all of them) does you just as much good as a shot of redex every 6 months.

All I'm saying is why spend money on redex when you are cleaning your fuel system with every fill up? *shrug*

FWIW I used to occasionally use Redex fuel system cleaner on my Charade Turbo, which was run exclusively on T99 or V-Power. Can't say I ever noticed any difference to how it ran or MPG after putting the Redex in.

If anything I'd say Redex is more guilty of coaxing people into a sale using promises of intangible benefits. I tend to put redex in the same category as slick 50, amsoil engine restore and the like.
