will my wheel choices fit?

Post by g.lewarne »

after much research and digging around i have decided on a set of new wheels for my 2 and would just like a quick yes / no on wheter they will fit or not.

my concern in mainly the fronts as from what i understand the bottom spring cup is very close to the upper edge of most wheel / tyre combos.

I have a rev1 with standard suspension :)

fronts: 205/45, 17 inch, offset 40, 7inch width

Rear: 225/45, 17 inch, offset 40, 7 inch width

I want to keep as high a profile tyre as possible on the 17s so if my choice is wrong please educate me :) This is my first foray into the world of wheels so im a bit of a newb here :-k

cheers :)

yeah thats what i used to calculate my tyre choices but im just not sure on whether the fronts will actually fit since im increasing overall diameter a bit :-k (and it doesnt seems to say whether they will actually fit or not)

by the way, these are the wheels we are getting :) http://www.alloywheels.com/product.asp? ... ords=Alloy

well if you used that calculator how have you come up with a 45 profile?? lol

17s should be run on 40s to keep the same size as stock....

also a 7inch rim front and rear with a et40, isnt ideal at all.

well yeah thats where i was getting confused. so what is ideal sizes on 17's (considering i want to keep high profile)

please forgive my ignorance

edit, just looking at trye size info i have been making the mistake that profile is in MM, not % of width as it actually is LOL ok so now im very confused :(

basically, im looking for 17s that will approximate the ride and geometry of the factory fit wheels, anything thats better than the 14 inch deathfinders i have on there at the moment (dont ask)

There are probably 1000s of folks running 17s on this site. Lol
A search is probably your friend.

Tyre sizes depend on wheel width, but generally and 99% of the time people go with a 40 profile.

Front range from 205-215 and rears from 235-255 in general.

With 7s each end, I'd guess 215/40 and 235/40 is your best bet.
Tho as said, those offsets arnt good nor is the rear width really. There going to appear very sunk into the arch!!!
You ideally want a staggered wheel size front and rear. Ie 7 front 8 rear.
(stock is 6 and 7). And et35 is a good offset to go with.

thanks you, thats just the type of answer i have been looking for :)

i suppose since the wheels i like are not available in an 8 inch width, i could get a space for the rears.....

so, i can get the wheels i like with the following tyres,

215/40 front and 235/40 rear, rolling diameter is nearly stock (+2mph according to calculator at 62mph)

or i go elsewhere and find different wheels i like and start over :( oh this is such hard work :?

i had 235/40 on the rear of some 17's a while back now, and found them to be too bulgy/fat looking. especially on a 7j rim.
i ended up with 205/40/17 front and 215/40/17 on the rear and they looked much better, although not the ideal stagger. can't remember the offset, but they where sunk in a little under the arches. have a look in my garage to give you some idea.. they are the silver one's. my gold one's are much better fit. 205/45/16 7j front ...225/45/16 8j rear. offset about 32 i think but sits near flush with body

You are right to be concerned. A 45 profile tyre on 17" wheels will rub on this spring cup on the front. At the back a 45 profile would be fine though.

ok one last question then....

found these for a very reasonable price http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 3D1&_rdc=1

its an 8j front 9j rear, offset 35(front) / 38 (rear), 5x114 PCD

supplied and fitted with 215/40/17 front and 235/40/17 rear avon ZZ3s for £670 all in

what ya all think? should look good on a red car..... the wheel calculator says they will sit exactly flush to arches too :D

if you think a 215/40 8j on the front will be a tight squeeze to the spring cup can get 205/40 for same price.... ?

*****just to check*****
would i need arches rolled with these? would they rub the arches?
