[Mk2] [Turbo] Garrett Turbos, Tial Wastegates and Stock Manifold

Post by Shmed »

How many people are running Garrett turbos (or other T3 turbos) on a stock manifold, and what have you done about wastegates?

I have an MV-S which has V-Band clamps, and GT30 and a stock rev 3 manifold. I was thinking of getting one of these adapters:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/T2-T25-T28-T3-TUR ... 1758wt_870

and one of these converters:

http://himni-racing.com/index.php?main_ ... ts_id=1740

Does anyone have any other options (cheapish please - I can't afford FullRace manifold....)

Not so what access would be like with the waste gate there... also screamer pipe would be at a funny angle I would have thought.

A mod to relocate the waste gate flange would probs do the trick but then would cost more money!

IMO one made from solid would be a better bet ... try ATS for an adaptor plate.

I'm planning to have the screamer plumbed back into the exhaust, think it would be too loud for a track car.

Don't know that that would make a difference though

I know, but about £800 cheaper makes me think it's worth a shot - that would pretty much cover my coilovers.....

I ran a gt30 on a stock manifold and it over boost like a mo fo!!!

It could not flow enough exhuast gas to the wastegate!!

So i had to get some custom pipework done and then it overboosting.

But then i cracked the block.........

a GT3076r should be ran on a T3 footprint

Be worth while just to get the complete kit and not ass around.

thats what i did and pat myself on the back as i have heard horror stories with doing things cheap on turbo's

Hindsight is a wonderful thing! Thought I was saving some cash by building my own kit.

Think I'll bite the bullet and get a full race manifold and downpipe.

Mine was a full kit i bought but with an adaptor plate off one of tb kits and it overboosted as the hks gt30 normally runs a hks manifold. That was the problem i had anyway.

It might work mate or it might not.

Cheers for the tip mate. I was trying to get hold of one of the TB adapters, but if there is no guarantee that will work either, I think I might as well go for something proper like.....

Damned expensive this game!!! :(

Adapting

Post by toyokid »

I have used a standard rev 2, 9 bolt manifold
together with adapter flange that has an external wastegate port.
Not sure why stock manifold would cause over-boosting?
What about pipework?

I ended up using a small wastegate with a diamond flange
which means that I have a 65mm HKS external wastegate for sale
that uses a v band flange.

I think the overboost is more through bad design of the adapters, rather than the stock manifold. From what I can tell, because the gate is perpendicular to the flow of gas, it is effectively 'easier' for the exhaust gases to carry on pushing through the turbo, though I am happy to be put right on this?!

adapted

Post by toyokid »

I am not sure I agree with your argument
I rather think there will be a lot of pressure in there
which will find its' own escape route?
Maybe look at:-
bigger wastegate?
Stronger/weaker spring?
matching inlet to exhaust wheels?

I say this advisedly
I haven't run my car yet!
Hope to have my new turbo fitted within the next 2 weeks.

never heard any complaints about tb adaptors before or any other "well" made adaptor! Much cheaper too!

I thougth the stock manifold was good for 500bhp odd... Surely if thats true then the stock manifold isnt the problem for overboosting as people running 400+ HP on the Stock manifold wouldnt be using it if it was..

If you are going to spend some money do it right the first time.
This is what I shall be using.

But there is no reason why a stock manifold will not work with an adaptor and the right waste gate.
