[Mk2] [NA] speaker distortion even at low volume

Post by mettam1988 »

i brought my first mr2 2 weeks ago, a lovely rev3 NA in carribean blue.
ive slowly been checking things over and getting it set up how i wanted.

The problem is i've just popped the old head unit out and was about to install a newer one that is ipod compatible when i noticed how botched the wiring is.
a previous owner has literally used scissors and sellotape to adapt the wiring to fit his headunit and a set of 6x9's behind the seats.
i had previosuly noticed that the passenger side 6x9 has really bad distortion even at low volume and had assumed it was blown, but im now thinking the crap wiring might be my problem, is this likely?

What do people think:
1) redo all the wiring and see if that fixes it
2)completley start again and get a deal on having new speakers installed along with all new wiring?

Mine was the same!

I found that the stereo wires had been wired up in line in the following manner, two different sets of speaker wires from the headunit going to the same speaker except one + onto the other - and and so on. The sound was all crackling even on a low volume setting.

every other wire was also a cluster...... I sat in the garage and went through each wire in turn, it took about an hour to re-wire each speaker cable, and other wiring to the correct place on the patch harness using proper connections etc.

Now everythings sounds spot on as it should!

May fit an amp next.....

I would certainly re do the wiring, regardless, from a safety point of view, it is also most likely to fix your problem
