[Mk2] [Turbo] turbo rebuild

Post by nickson »

i have 2 ct26 turbos off mr2 turbo, one is std, the other im told has a steel shaft, and the compressor blades look totally different from the other.

basically they both seem to have a bit of play and even slight endfloat so i assume they want a rebuild.

wheres the best place to buy rebuild kit, how much, and who can carry out rebuild.

thanks

remember a journal bearing turbo will have some noticeable play when not full of oil.

i dont mind rebuilding it myself, for some reason i thought you had to have it balenced after a rebuild?

Yes you will need to get the turbo balanced professionally which is why people do not rebuild turbos themselves.

If its not balanced properly then, if your lucky, the turbine wheel could easily catch the housing and shatter. If the same happens to your compressor wheel then a fragment could easily find its way into the engine block and bye bye pistons etc.

Just had mine done at Universal Turbos for £450.

I thought that they only had to be re-balanced if a wheel was changed ? If the shaft and wheels are fine, fitting new bearings won't require a re-balance ?
