Octane Boosters

Post by Poker Face »

I have been looking at octane boosters for various reasons(better perfomance blitz ecu mapped at 101 ron etc).

I know that 1 octane pt = 0.1 and all that, but what conserns me is that most over the counter octane boosters are for lower grade fuel. From what I understand US fuel is 88-91 octane and this is were octane booster really works.

The higher the octane the fuel if you just add any old chemical to boost octane then in theory the balance could be wrong and a waste of money?

I use 99 ron whenever possible and 97 when I have no choice but here is the question. Is it worth using octane booster on 99 ron fuel and if so which one? :-k

Don't know how they work on higher RON fuel but fifth gear tested 5 of them on standard fuel last week and all 5 actually reduced performance...

Us fuel is measured in PON (pump octane rating) not RON (research octane rating) as over here, when converted there is very little difference between our regular and super unleaded and their's.

Now that you've said that I did a power run the other day and the figure was lower than I expected but I'd put it down to something else as car hadn't seemed quite right, but i hit 286bhp with some 97ron that had been in the car for over 6 moths whilst VOR and 279bhp with 99 ron and octane booster(Lucas).

I know that is a small amount of hp but allegedly the car hit 310 bhp I wasn't there(when it happened) and I'm trying for 300. It would be ironic if octane booster was holding me back.

So much for an industry standard and there I was thinking no wonder the fuel in the states is so cheap.Lol.

I have just wathed 5th gear on youtube and the products they used are ones i dissmissed as dog s**t.

I also believe you can buy toulene and other stuff over the counter which is meant to be better but again what about mixtures?

you can't buy toulene over the counter or at least you couldn't last time I checked. 30% would be a good mix with super

@ 30% what octane would you expect from 99ron? As I have found a website that sells it then as value for money would go this is s**t. £53.13 for 4 gallons(4.5ltr). @30% ratio thats approx 3 gallon on a full tank of fuel.

I think I may of answered my own question!!!

http://www.fueltechexperts.com/2008/08/ ... h-is-best/ is one of the articles out there

don't forget a fair few number of chemicals are available as blends for reasonable prices and over the counter however get it wrong and it's the wrong type of suck squeeze BANG blow so I'm not advising anything on here :thumleft:

As for mixes, well I did a rough chart for myself and you'd be best checking the logic

mix.............petrol L ....ron.......booster L .......ron.......resultant Ron
0%.............50.............98.............0.0............110.............98.0
10%...........45.............98.............5.0............110.............99.2
20%............40.............98............10.0..........110.............100.4
30%............35.............98............15.0..........110.............101.6
40%............30.............98.............20.0.........110.............102.8
