[Mk2] [NA] How To Remove Alternator?

Post by Goldy »

Hi,

I've tried every concievable way to remove the pivot bolt from the alternator to but its siezed solid. Can you remove the entire bracket and alternator from the engine in situ?

Thanks in advance,

From memory - you can only just get the alternator out of the top on its own.

This is a real a pig of a job if its seized up- I am also sure that my pivot bolt had some thread lock or similar on it.

Have you tried leavering the alternator with a breakers bar (or similar?) - you can often get some purchase off the boot wall. This might just help loosen it off a little (and any stray thread lock).

Other than that - the usual - WD40, torque, heat

You cant get the bracket off, the driveshaft is in the way of the last bolt!easiest way is to get the alternator off and then the exhaust and bring it out that. Thats the way me and my mate did it. We couldn't get it out the top.

It's an N/A, does that mean I can remove the entire alternator bracket assembly without taking the alternator off the bracket? If so where are the bolts?

I've unbolted the suspension to get more access on the drivers side.

I've managed to move the alternator slight hitting it with a hammer and my breaker bar, enough so that I have now removed the belt.

I've tried a shedload of heat and the 14mm Bolt Grips and the 13mm bolt grips, neither of these can get enough purchase to shift the damn thing.

I'm giving up at this point, unless anyone has any better suggestions that don't involve welding nuts on.

I would like to remove the whole bracket but I'm not sure that this is possible with the alternator in situ.

Maybe you will have to source a new bolt and grind it off :?:

I am sure that you cannot remove the alternator with the bracket still attached. When I did mine, the bracket came out the bottom, the aternator out the top.

Good luck.

There are bolts that hold the alt. bracket on that cant be accessed without removing the alt.

Think your only option if you cant get that bolt out is to either cut the alternator and/or alt. bracket so you can get the alt. off then the bracket out.

In the end, lewis got it freed off using Irwin bolt grips, highly recommended :thumleft: (both of them)
