[Mk2] [Turbo] starter problem

Post by sticks »

used the search and still cant really find any info on this but went out this morning and it seems like the starter is on the way out.it struggled a bit to start an it made a very loud screeching sound.done this another 2 times and then after that the car failed ta start and it made an even worse constant screeching sound.got it going with a push start and now its starting again but the screeching is still there.is this the starter itself or is there anything else ta do with the starter that would cause this like a bad connection or relay?

You sure the screeching noise ain't the fan belt slipping? I have never heard a starter motor screech before.

May just need a grease up or something, failing that look in the for sale section, you may find one for sale.

Could be the kick solenoid not letting the starter cog retract after engine start, which means the starter is jammed out and being rotated via the engine when it’s running, this will give you a scream

I’ve replaced many starters in my times, when there on there last legs they become slow turning making the engine difficult to start, also if the brushes are warn to the max then the starter will scream when it rotates which eventually leads to them locking up and just giving you a click noise every time you turn the ignition key because the brushes are so warn they no longer touch the commutator and have basically put mega weld blobs all over the commutator
