Standard size for Crank to Con Rod bearings/shells

Post by PlasticMonster »

Hi, was hoping someone would know this off the top of their head...

I'm using a standard crank with Eagle rods and need to connect them together :)

Got the crank to block ones but cant find the size of these...Fensport were not exactly ..um interested.. lol

Thanks in advance.

why do you need to know the size?
if it is a standard crank there are specific bearings for the job without having to know the size

If it's a stock crank that hasn't been machined before, then all you need is a stock set of shells - ACL duraglide / Clevitte 77 !

Standard toyota bearings come in 3 sizes, the size you would need would be determined by the number stamped on the rod / main caps, and figures stamped on the block and crank shaft.

Have a look at the BGB: pages EM147 and EM149

In your case you have after market rods, and so no reference for which size standard big end bearings you need. In the main it seems that the standard size ACL bearings will usually fit, but you will need to at least use plastiguage to check the clearance before you run the engine. If you are outside the tolerances described I think ACL will do you under / over size shells to compensate.

ah, you didnt say standard ones
one would assume you meant aftermarket with using eagle rods
EDIT:hang on, this doesnt make sense
at the moment it sounds like you are going to aquire a set of bearings using your old standard rods then use them with the eagle rods? :-k

Whilst agreeing with all the comments with respect to the variation in sizes refitting stock rods back on the crank, toyotas tolerance levels are very high, so the clearance is at a minimal ! So no issue restoring the bottom end to the original spec.

When fitting aftermarket rods like eagle, carillo etc Ive always used the "sets" available from acl / clevitte 77 which have worked without issue, there's also a cost saving with these over Toyota parts too !

I took it to mean he's using Eagle rods and a standard crank, and so wouldn't know what size Toyota bearings to order if he was gonna use Toyota bearings. The advice to use ACl (or similar) would get round this problem as they generally only sell one size.

I absolutely agree- I was just trying to explain why he was asked which size bearings he wanted when he called to order em :thumleft:

I would also completely agree that it makes more sense to use after market bearings as well :thumleft:

Regardless- I would think it sensible as a basic check to plastiguage for tolerances when installing bearings?

I remember 10 year ago when there were claims of specialist tools needed to sort these mr2 engines out ! I'd stripped the 4age and 3SGE before tackling the Mr2s, how hard can it be !!Halfords set, big hammer and a deep set 32mm socket for the hubs, and everything was in pieces !!

Just nuts and bolts !
