Stripping the MR2

Post by MarkR32 »

Afternoon all,

I have a rev 3 n/a that i want to turn towards motorsport so stripping it out is on the cards, only issue is that it for now also have to remain a now and again daily driver.. what would you recommend stripping out until i can go full hog and remove the lot ..

Cheers

bit of a loose question, depends on how much comfort you want and how much you want to keep the noise down

i have personally removed the std seats and i have sports seats (not fixed buckets) i have removed the entire stereo system and speakers, the spce saver, all the sound deadnening (the firewall carpet weighs a bit too)

you could of course remove the power steering, abs, have lightweight wheels, lightweight calipers/discs to imporve the unsprung weight, coilovers must weigh less than std suspension. lightweight panels. half a tank of fuel instead of a full tank. dashboard, and ALL interior trim. boot carpet and boot lift spring etc etc, the list is endless, remove what you can do without (safely)

personally if i lost a stone (or 3) id put the stereo back in, and on a serious note if you need to lose a few pounds then thats a good place to start - you dont see many overweight racing drivers - well winning ones

Yeah sorry about the loose question, im wanting to compete in motorsport in 2011 using the car so need to get it ready sort of now haha  the noise as such doest bother me, driven a subaru and gtr that have been stripped before, and i olny drive the car for about 40 miles a week if that then the occasional drive to wales from Nottingham. (if i can borrow a BMW haha) so the car really dont move.

i looking at get fixed seats and removing everything but the dash and sticking a custom cage in there and two fixed bucket seats (one i can remove when racing) :D

I can afford to lose more weight haha (playing rugby and only being 11 stone i get enough trouble as it is haha)

just wondering what the car is like without the interior in there .. as i have never stripped an mr2 with the ngine behind me haha

difficult for me to say, mine is a v6 with poly engine torque mounts that transmit alot of noise into the cabin anyway, its drowned out by the noise of the walbro fuel pump on idle though and the induction kit (soon to add a mongoose tubby exhaust) when driving, its loud but i dont care as its only a fun day car anyway

not sure about on an mr2 but touring cars dont even have rubber seals around the doors/boot etc depends on how far you want to go

humm i cant got that far .. looking into carbon door cards and poly windows but the car sits outside as i have no garage at the moment #-o  so a lack of seals could be an issue but its an idea should a garage come up ..

any other ideas where i could shead a few pound haha

There's a can of worms... some doors don't have side impact bars but it's not clear whether they are rev1&2 or rev1 and optional factory fit in rev2? Also the wiring looms are different and the door stays & lock layouts are different so changing doors can be a right pain!

It depends how far to go really, here's a few pictures of my daily drive :D for inspiration......

there are loads of little things which can soon add up... spare wiring, unused brackets etc.

It has become a bit of an obsession lol :) I havent used carbon or expensive items to save weight because I cant afford them but even without there's a lot of weight to be saved.

It does make you appreciate how comfortable the standard mr2 is though :thumleft:
