Trolley jacks + Axle stands

Post by Harold »

Hello chaps,

I'm planning on buying an mr2 in the near future and wanting to work on it myself. However, can anyone recommend a trolley jack that will go low enough, has a high enough lift, not fall apart and not cost a fortune?

Same with axle stands, or would these be fine?

Thanks very much.

i had this problem, ended up with two  (not sure how it will be for cars on standard suspension but mine is lowered)
there are ones like the halfords item and other general ones you can find in your local motor factors but i found none of them would go high enough to get high up on axle stands so ended up buying an £80 3 tonne item (jacks up to nearly 500mm)
i then discovered that it wouldnt go under my sills by just a few millimeters #-o
now i use some little plastic ramps so i can use the central jacking points when i am using axle stands
otherwise i just use the cheapo halfords jack if i need to take a wheel off or something and jack it at the sill
as for as axle stands go, only thing you need to know is you want the ones with rounded contact points as opposed to sharp edges

i bought this jack.. http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/p ... Y+JACK.htm

goes higher than most. but not low enough to go under my car, which is lowered though. i just drive onto a 2" chock off wood and then it goes under fine. but i wanted one that goes higher than most others for the money.

imho its the best bang for buck.. :thumleft:

No nonsense, solid jack that will last for years and years...it will go under my sills and under the exhaust to reach the rear subframe. My car has been slightly lowered as well.

I wouldn't be without it :thumleft:

Hmm, might have to rethink my Clarke 2tonne long trolley jack. Only goes up to 380mm.

Most of the the circa £30-£50 ones they have go up to around that height. I don't suspect I'll be doing much hardcore work but would you advise the OP (and me!) to go for the 520mm jobbies?

I always thought the trolley jack is more to get the car up to a good height onto the axle stands and then remove so you can get under the car itself.

That one looks pretty good, found this one also that looks suitable - Sealey trolley jack

you dont have to jack up under the sill....you can do it by the control arm.

Personally I think a higher capacity jack is a better idea- it'll easily lift your car safely, but will also cope with anything else you throw at it as well (lifting the odd range rover for example  )- all well within it's capacity. It's also wider and so a bit more stable- always a good thing imo.

I always use axle stands, but often I'll use the jack at the same time as well as extra security.

It's also got a really smooth release- which is ideal for lowering/ aligning engines, gearboxes, etc.

It's a good all round garage tool- highly recommended, and well worth the slightly higher cost if you want something that will last you :thumleft:

Are there any axle stands that people could also recommend?

That alu jack does look nice nikaiyo, but at 1.25 tonnes it won't hold much, I'd rather get one that i could use on a variety of cars if need be.

That's the beast that I've got too, weighs a fri88ing tonne  Doesn't go under the lip on the front bumper though so I just drive the car up onto a couple of bricks (one each side) and Bob's your mothers brother :)

Sounds like the min clearance high is a problem that is easily overcome. But does the working height differences of say 380mm like the 1.25 tonne and 520mm of the 'beast' make a noticable difference? (i.e. enough difference to warrant an extra £40 spend on what would probably be an occasional use item).

I half own a Sealey low clearance jack. Definitely was worth buying as my bro in law and i have owned many lowered cars.

We have the Yankee 3001LE. I think it had one of the lowest saddle height, heavy lifting capacity of 3 tonnes and we paid about £150 about 5+ years ago.

It's saddle height is so low it gets under the front of my CRX VT on 50mm lowering springs and stock splitter. No problem getting under my Berk twin exhaust cans to reach the rear subframe jacking point on my 30mm lowered mr2 as well :)

Just had a look and you can buy for only £135 on eBay now

if you dont need to remove rear wheels, then this is AWSOME!!!
cost me bout £80 and is from an america company, i got it on ebay, can take 5 tons!!! is good for up to 11inch wide rims!!
VERY few ramps are more than 7-8inchs....

if you need to remove both wheels.....

ive got this one, £30, no issues, i can get between the exhaust by a couple of mm, and get to the subframe to lift...

and got stands like this, tho i need to remove the pin and literally have it sitting on its lowest position....(without the pin in there) and like above always keep my jacks on the car for extra safety AS WELL as popping my spare wheels under the sills!!!! so if stand AND jack went, the car would land on the alloys....

everything does the job

ramps are built for those big SUVs in the US, and plenty of pics with JCBs on these ramps...plastic or not, if constructed correctly, no reason why it cant support whats advertised.

a very quick google just found these, half way down the page, says it supports 5.5tons! (12000lb is 5500kg)

(ps, i think these are my very ramps, not 100% tho)

Halfords do a kit, 2 chocks, 1 2-Tonne trolley jack, 2 axel stands & a roller thing you lie on (very comfy)

£40 for the lot iirc.

I picked one up in April when I came over. Abosolute cracking buy.

Thanks for the advice guys, I think I will most likely buy a sealey 2500le and some sealey/halfords 3 tonne stands.
