[Mk2] [Turbo] Releasing the 19mm bolt in the bottom pulley

Post by adam maclean »

Trying to change the timing belt. But the 19mm bolt on the bottom will not release. It just keeps turning the pulley with it. Even with it in gear and the hand and foot break on. Is there something I'm doing wrong? Is it something stupid like a left hand thread? ](*,)

They can be a PITA to take off. If the pulley is still turning with it in gear and brake on, then you could try whipping off the starter motor and locking the flywheel up.

Not a bad thought. Also had impact gun suggested.

Yeah, you need to shock it off. I had a V6 engine on a stand, screwed in a few of the flywheel bolts to jam up the crank, got a big blokes breaker bar with a 3 meter long tube and snapped the flywheel bolts.

Tried whacking the bolt with a socket on it and used the same breaker bar, but shocking the bolt rather than hanging off it and it came free.

Its much easier when its not attached to the car tho.

I bet. Unfortunately I don't have that luxury . It's on the drive with stands. I'll beg, borrow or steal an impact gun tomorrow.

i have 850 pft torque cp air gun but even that some times wont undo them, have you tried a breaker bar wedged down on to the floor then turn engine over on key that normaly works :thumleft:

I wouldn't like to try that to be honest. Sounds like too much potential for damage to me.

its never caused me a problem in over 12 years working for toyota,if you dont like that way another way is a large chisel on to the edge of the nut shock it round with a large hammer but you will need a new crank bolt, the odd thing is at work its always the mr2s & yaris that cause a problem, avensis ,landcruiser, hiace come off easy with a crank bar or air gun

I had this problem not long ago, it wouldn't come off with me hanging off a breaker bar but seemed to come off ok when i put a sockek on it and gave it a sharp smack with a hammer.

mind the pully though, i slipped with the hammer and clipped the side of the pully  it took a large chunk out of it... there not that strong!

Off and belt done. Gun didn't make a dent in it. In the end we jammed a screw driver in the fly wheel and the old man held it tight while I gave it a kick. The rest was just a fiddly xxxxxx xxxxxx as usual.

Any one know if it's common for a belt to skip a tooth? Talking to a mate after I'd done it and he said a lot of the belts he'd changed on MR2's had skipped a tooth after being fitted.

I've not herd of them skipping a tooth but that doesn't sound right.

As for removing the nut, I set mine up with a ratchet/breaker bar on it such that the the end of the bar was resting on the ground. Then a quick flick of the starter motor and the car did all the hard work :)

I doubt the BGB would suggest that as a method but it did the trick and needs no special tools or planning :thumleft:
