Oil recomendation for 135k Rev 2 NA

Post by TJS »

Can anyone recomend a good oil choice for my 135k Rev 2 NA? I dont want to spend a fortune.

The cars not going to be used daily, just weekends and the occasional track day.

I found Valoline Maxlife Semi Synthetic 10/40 recomended for older, high milliage cars.

Any thoughts :?:

Hi

I use Castrol GTX High Mileage in my partner's Cinquecento and our campervan, but I use vanilla GTX in the na and the same or Millers in the v6.

Whether what I'm doing is the right thing to do goodness only knows; I suspect there's much more that could be said! :) It's probably one of those things where people get quite religious.

Try having a look here :

I use Mobil 1 0W40 fully synthetic on my 162k Rev 3 n/a which I always bought from Costco at £20+VAT per 4L tub. I cannot find another cheaper source to similar quality oil.

However, please note that my car doesn't burn any oil between 9k oil change with 50% central London driving and 50% track use so I have not gone for thicker oil.

Why not give Mobil 1 0W40 a try and if it is too thin you can always change to Mobil 1 Super 15W40 semi synthetic.

This is exactly the kind of thing i was wondering. I've got a 76k Rev 3 N/A just arrived in the family and i'm about to change the oil. Any ideas on that or would just a good Castrol or Mobil one do the job? Mainly use it for country lanes and B Roads

After contacting Opie oils via email including the type of car and what I use it for they recomemded this oil for a buget choice. With no loss performance or wear wise. They also do a 5W40 version which is slightly pricer.

They also offer discounts to lots of owners clubs.

Hope that helps.

Depends on the current condition of individual engine. I went for 0W cold grade for best protection in winter and cold start and 30/40 hot grade for sufficient thickness for hot engine.

However, if your car burns oil when cold then go for a thicker 10W or 15W cold grade or if it burns oil when hot then go for the higher 40 or 50 hot grade.

My preference is to go for the thinnest hot grade my engines would operate in for best efficient (i.e. lower drag) and any specific additives required for individual engine at the lowest cost per litre.

For example I don't use Castrol Edge 0W30 in the MR2 as it costs over £10 per litre whereas Mobil 1 0W40 at £5 per litre would do. In contrast, I have to use Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel low ash oil at MB229.51 spec on my S320CDI as that was specified for low on sulphated ash, phosphorus and sulphur to limit the damage on the EU4 particle filter which costs £12 per litre :(

I use Castrol GTX in all my engines (have done for a long time now), new, old, tubby or N/A. 10w40 Magnatec in my tuned BEAMS and mostly stock GT4 -but must admit I prefer to change oil a little more often than most. But it's not bad priced and available everywhere off the shelf as well (cheaper and quicker than paying postage for me anyway).
