Really dissapointed with my 1/4 :o(

Post by mr2turbo99 »

So i got to the pod on Sunday and was expecting some really good results but i came away extremely dissapointed especially after my car is "modified" with Intercooler, Downpipe, Zorst, EBC and filter.

The best i ran all day breaks down like this.

Reaction------ +.5378
60ft------------ 2.1709
330ft -----------6.3888
1/8 ET----------9.8756
1/8 MPH--------72.20
1000' ET--------12.7827
1/4 ET----------15.2838
1/4 MPH -------89.60

My friend in the stands reckons i wasnt giving it enough S*** but it felt fast to me :o( The other thing is ive got a really stiff gearbox and im sort of hoping this has contributed to the poor time. Ive not really noticed it before on the street but as soon as i was in race mode i felt i couldnt shift fast enough.

Sad times.

I service the engine every 5000 miles or 6 months (which ever comes first)

Thats oil - 15w 50 mobil 1, filter (toyota), plugs, cap and rotor arm.

Coolant every 2 years

Ran compression test on the saturday to make sure the engine was sound for racing - same PSI accross all cylinders.

It does use oil but the turbo has seen 106k miles and i have a rocker cover gasket leak (only small)

pop a chargecooler or uprated IC on there and have another go.

I did a load of runs last summer in mine with a 205 cc fitted and was hitting anything from 14s right down to 13.2s.

the key to a good time is all down to the launch mate jsut practice it!

took me a good 4 runs beforei started posting respectable times!! :thumleft:

I miss that car :(

This is the thing. Ive got an uprated IC as well as the Downpipe, mongoose exhaust, EBC and apexi filter. I guess thats why im so disapointed. I understand a standard tubby can do a 1/4 in as little as 14.5 seconds. Starts where good too, beat an evo off the line for about 2 seconds lol.

Looking at the slips im doing 1/8 mile at 72.20 (9.8 seconds) and the remaining 1/4 im only finishing up 17mph faster?

Hmmn, that's not a good time for the mods you have. I assume you weren't hitting the top of the gears but were revving it well? If so I'd be thinking the engine is down on power a little bit, but if it is regularly serviced maybe it's a boost issue?

I could feel the power drop away after 6.5k rpm so i decided to shift just before but my shifts where hampered due to the tough gearbox.

One thing on the boost, i set it up last week and hit 11.7psi (highest stable boost acheived) but at the pod (same settings) it was only reaching 9.6psi I did have a run where i hit 10.7psi but only after i upped the duty from 30 to 40.

Im hoping it is turbo related because that would simply require a replacement but if its the engine thats just bad news :o(

ah see my times were running 1 bar boost.

Seems like your struggling to make any decent pressure there.

i was running 14psi on mine. pulled hard right in every gear.

are you running with a dump valve or the stock recirc valve?

if you have a VTA Dump valve then that will ruin your times...

You are shifting a bit low, you need to rev it well without hitting the top! But your real issue is your boost pressure IMHO, that's low. You might be losing pressure somewhere when it spools up, best take a good look at the hosing.

Yup going to have a good look tonight. Im also going to shorten the length of hose that runs to the solenoid see if that makes a difference. Its about 20cm to the inlet port (from turbo) and 35cm from the outlet port back to the actuator.

Just a quick question on batteries. I have reason to believe my battery is pretty tired. Could this contribute to any power loss

No, none whatsoever. Once the engine is running, all power comes from the alternator.

When i first got my old Carrib blue tubby i found out on the RR that it was only producing 7.5psi of boost which is what it does in saftey mode. Now your saying yours is 9.5psi or there abouts which rules that out.

I made about 230bhp and 240lb ft torque from a standard rev 3 tubby on 7.5psi and then once i upped it to 16psi i made 252bhp but the torque jumped up a fair bit to 275 lb ft.

With just an apexi induction kit i managed a 13.5 on the strip and granted its a rev 3 but the rev 2 should be low 14's if not high 13's in standard form.

Personally i deffo think its down to your low boost than anything else as others have also stated. It makes a big difference when you up the boost to 1 bar.
