[Mk2] [Turbo] crank shaft beaings... help please.

Post by castrolfan »

hi guys,

Im re-building a rev 3 3sgte engine, its done 65k and cracked piston 3.
my question is should i do the crank shaft bearing during the re-build or leave them as is? its going to be over £100 to do them and i am on a budget

any info most welcome :D

If you are rebuilding the engine yourself surely it won't cost you £100 just for the bearings? Or are you taking into account a crankshaft regrind?

Personally if I was to rebuild an engine, I would renew everything for piece of mind. You wouldn't want to spend the money and take the time on stripping it down and rebuilding it only for the big ends to let go a few months/years down the line.

Check the bearings, if there is wear then fit new ones but if all ok then leave them. The same with the oil pump, check for wear and replace if it needs it.

If you are not sure take the bearings out, take photos and put up here and we can tell you if they are ok or not.

Just rebuilt a rev 3 engine with 153,000 km some in miles too and i replaced everything because i thought it would need it!

When i changed the bearings there was pretty much no wear on them at all, so was a bit pointless really, infact the whole engine didnt really need a rebuild at all.

So with any luck yours will be fine too, but as said above check them first.
