Anyone know if inverted coilovers are worth the extra cash?

They do "upside down" shock absorbers for cars?

UD forks are, allegedly, a good idea on motorbikes because they can (if made properly) reduce the unsprung weight of the front wheel quite significantly which gives the bike better handling.

On a road car it probably won't make a noticeable difference to the handling if you have a couple of kgs more of unsprung weight so a well-regarded set of conventional shocks is probably a wiser choice than UD ones.

The only other issue is if the UD dampers will give you useful extra clearance around the wheels.
Given the way coil-overs work there's always gonna be a spring wrapped around the damper, regardless of which way up the damper is, so that shouldn't be an issue on any coil-overs for an MR2.

What if you wanted something that had a good comfort option?

Since i am looking at a rev 3 N/A with around 90-110K miles, i imagine the suspension would benefit from a good overhaul. I am hoping to have something that isnt too sport focused, but something that is slightly firmer, lowered with good ride comfort in my backwater welsh roads!

Any suggestions?

Or hell anywhere to point me for some good advice/articles?

European brands, and American Japanease brands, such as Ohlins, Koni, KW, Bilstein, Penske, Dynamics/Multimatic, Sachs, JRZ, GAZ,Tein,HKS,Cusco etc all utilise European/American/jap design, development and manufacture. the quality is high, sometimes so are the prices.

D2, KSport, Megan, F2, G4, HSD, BC Racing, etc are all designed, "developed" (i say it in inverted commas because there isnt any car-specific testing and development, which is why the damping is so so poor) and manufactured in Taiwan and China. the problems arent a function of poor manufacturing standards, they are a function of the people designing them having no idea what damping a car requires for good performance, comfort and durability, and targeting profits over quality. the top European American and jap brands have a long history in dampers, and that is the difference in quality and performance.... See More

the easiest way to summarise it is to say that a UK company could make a television, and a Taiwanese company could make one that was just as good. but if a Taiwanese company tried to build a Formula 1 car the same as the Brawn GP from last season they would fail, miserably. the reason being that there is decades of knowledge and experience behind the success of an F1 team, and the same applies to the components on the car (e.g. dampers in this case). you cant just manufacture something based on simple ideas and visual appearance and expect it to perform the same as the products from companies that have been doing it for decades at the highest levels of motorsport (which is where pretty much ALL of the major development occurs). what kind of serious motorsport does Taiwan have?

imo theres 3 things you just dont skimp on

1. breaks
2. tyres
3.suspention
:thumleft:

go tein dude trust me 8)
stock isnt that soup or something.....?

Understand what you're saying but for the amount extra you have to pay for the teins and after looking at reviews I am going to be going for the BC I think as performance still sounds great. Completely appreciate your reply, makes alot of sense but i can't afford that extra right now in any case.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and presume you're wearing teins

I'm using a set of Tein mono's. Prob a bit overkill for road use, not comfortable in the slightest but make a pretty good road/track car. What is the intended use for yours?

If I was buying for a pure road car I would deff go with tein ss, heard nothing but good things about them. In my experience there is almost allways a reason why some things cost a little more than others. Also bare in mine that you could fit the Tein edfc, got it myslef and love it!

I would also take a good look at all of your bushes, not suggesting you have to get polybushed replacements but it would be a bit of a waste to fit nice new coilovers and neglect other equally important components.

Mine is for simply road use.

Not even thought about polybushes, this is all new to me so all the help is needed and appreciated :thumleft: Where would be the best place to get them from?

These are the ones I'm using, I would just get yours checked first tho as they may well be fine. There are a few of the bushes that are a pain, the old ones needed burning out. Dont mean to put you off but it can be a task.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Toyota-MR2-Mk2-SW ... c18cd7[url]

Also check the top mounts if you are not planning on getting pillow ball replacements. I've heard that the TRD ones are a good in between.

If all of the above components on your car now are a little tired these will transform it. If they seem ok I wouldnt worry, its alot of cash and work to replace them all.

Best of luck with it.

Thanks but defo need new top mounts as it is these that have collapsed along with the shockers are on their way out!
And everything is basically still standard from first build so i'm guessing it prob will all need doing. I'll have a look later when i'm not in work!

Thanks for the luck,i'm going to need it :pale:

I can't comment on quality of products because I don't have coilovers... yet!

Just thought thoguh... The BC Coilovers come with top mounts, so if you get them, you'll save money on the top mount side of things, freeing up cash to sort the bushes if they need it!

Good luck :thumleft:

Just had coilovers fitted this morning!!! Feels Amazing!!! Everything currently set in the middle for now. Got my coilovers from a guy called CS who can be found on the 350z website or cougar store. Doesn't advertise MR2 parts for some reason but apparently has a fair supply of them.

Thumbs up to CS
Thumbs up to Cougar Store

Guy fitting them was a bit old school though and doesnt believe in coilovers etc, lol. Eh well! :thumleft:
