struggleing to choose suspension?

Post by timmomr2 »

ive been looking at coilovers and i dont know what to get.

im pretty sure i want topmounts with the set allthough im looking at compremises.

the main contenders seem to be

tein superstreets allthough at near 1k with topmounts there right at the top of my budget

the BC racing coilovers either the BR or the RM seiries one set come with fronnt and rear pillowball mounts the other comes with front camber adjustable mounts and pillowball rear i think

and i have also considered the D2 coilovers.

can anyone point me in the right direction. also why dont you get rear camber adjustable mounts with the RM seiries? and could someone post me a link to some superstreets with camber adjustable top mounts as all it says on what ive found is comes with upper mounts.

im trying to get a balance of keeping cost down but also getting the best i can.

cheers timmo

European brands, and American Japanease brands, such as Ohlins, Koni, KW, Bilstein, Penske, Dynamics/Multimatic, Sachs, JRZ, GAZ,Tein,HKS,Cusco etc all utilise European/American/jap design, development and manufacture. the quality is high, sometimes so are the prices.

D2, KSport, Megan, F2, G4, HSD, BC Racing, etc are all designed, "developed" (i say it in inverted commas because there isnt any car-specific testing and development, which is why the damping is so poor) and manufactured in Taiwan and China. the problems arent a function of poor manufacturing standards, they are a function of the people designing them having no idea what damping a car requires for good performance, comfort and durability, and targeting profits over quality. the top European American and jap brands have a long history in dampers, and that is the difference in quality and performance.

the easiest way to summarise it is to say that a UK company could make a television, and a Taiwanese company could make one that was just as good. but if a Taiwanese company tried to build a Formula 1 car the same as the Brawn GP from last season they would fail, miserably. the reason being that there is decades of knowledge and experience behind the success of an F1 team, and the same applies to the components on the car (e.g. dampers in this case). you cant just manufacture something based on simple ideas and visual appearance and expect it to perform the same as the products from companies that have been doing it for decades at the highest levels of motorsport (which is where pretty much ALL of the major development occurs). what kind of serious motorsport does Taiwan have?

hope this helps dude imo you cant go wrong with tein, iv tried and tested alot they always seem to come out on top :thumleft:

+1 on that, I got some Tein Super Streets that were pretty much mint, and hadn't been on the car long, for less than new BC's etc off a member here.
Can't fualt them at all, car handles like its on rails and the dampers are top notch.

unfortunately yes it dose make sense to me, i am allways slated for going for named brands but i allways think there is a good reason for it even if its just for braging wrights lol.

im pretty sure i want new now i have the money rather than second hand, i have heard alot of praise regarding the BC coilovers and also heard some bad things about the HSD's. im still un decided though i really cant make my mind up i want to avoid spending all my money but i have to really to get the best.

i think my op covers most performance parts and genrally in life you get what you pay for, i think its ok to cut a few corners here and there to save some hard earned, but imo theres 3 things you just dont skimp on

1. suspention
2. tyres
3. breaks

Go tein matey it will be the best money youv ever spent on her, iv been in so many diffrent cars with many diffrent suspention setups and alot fitted with BC put it this way they didnt even have to tell me the manafaturer as i guessed as soon as they went down the road

As you said in your post you have the funds so spend it on the best, if you want or anyone else was looking for a cheaper alternative, one of the best setups iv been in were a set of TRD shocks with tein springs (30mm drop)
for everyday car use this is the perfect combination of cost and good results

James at ToyotaGT are exclusively bringing in a new coilover range. I know he's fitted it to a few cars now and haven't seen any bad feedback. Price is very competitive and includes everything you need.

Might worth a look.

Gav I think in general what you are saying is spot on, but most of the JDM coilovers are for circuit use and will be scary on the UK roads! Cusco, HKS, Apex, TRD etc are designed for circuit use and will be pretty poop on the UK roads :pale:

As for Penske... great suspension if you want to spend $10,000 :thumleft:

I removed the TRD's from my car because the ride was just so hard...

I went to a brand called XYZ (the ones Bobby is talking about) and whilst they are made in Taiwain, but they are a propper motorsport company, they manufacture the suspension for Alfa in the WTC.

For the roads in the UK the XYZ's are much much bettter than the TRD's they compare really really well to the Superstreets in terms of comfort and ride.

Timmomr2 IIRC you dont get drop links with the TEINS, the rears work with stock droplinks, but for the fronts you will need to get some made up :eye:

Just letting you know, when I fitted mine I needed shorter droplinks on the front. I ended up buying 2 sets of rear droplinks to solve this :)

bu88er more money lol i might get some whiteline adjustables.

i wont be able to get pics up before and after really as the whole car is being sprayed. i may be able to get one when the car comes out of the oven but then its going to my mates unit to have all the bushes changed engine put back in etc etc.

Image

this is the best i can do for now allthough the car will look nothing like that when it comes out. it still has these wheels on but also different tyres. obviously as the engine is out if i take a pic of it comeing out of the oven it will be about 2 ft off the floor lol

the car wont be to everyones taste but ill hopefully have pics of it done in about 3 weeks

In the defense of the none JDM brands, my friend has recently put some bc's on his prelude and they're brilliant. barely any body roll as the spring rates are quite hard but the dampers are awesome as it feels SMOOTHER than his honda access (mugen basically) suspension that was already on it. It sticks like nothing I've been in before. it's amazing!
however I want my mr2 to feel like a rock so harder spring rates for me haha.

I was not knocking JDM brands, just saying that most of them are pretty shocking for use on the roads in the UK, mainly down to the state of roads.

Tein Superstreets on my old Rev 2 were so hard on pot holed roads that I started to fall out of love with the car! The ride was just unbearable for a daily driver. And that was on the softest setting.

Before the big freeze and the decline in the road surfaces, they weren't that bad. But once the roads fell apart that was it for me.

This is very very true,I found them just too hard for "Normal Day" roads

Unbearable is what it was unfortunately,Track they would be great!

Are there any coilovers that would be considered comfortable? I did hear that H&R make a set that are, anyone have any experience of them?
