MR2 Bodywork

Post by Southy »

Hey Guys,

My MR2 has been off the road for a few months and needs some bodywork sorting out.

Both rear arches, both sills, paintwork on the bonnet.

Does anyone know of any decent Mk1 specialists near the Bristol/Gloucester area that would come pick the car up, or accept the car being delivered on a trailer that are good at the bodywork stuff?
(It doesn't run right now, no starter motor, exhaust or rear brakes.)

And any ideas on prices?

Regards,

HI Southy,

I'm not from your area so can't suggest anywhere, but I have had work on arches and sills recently. I used a mobile welder, who was cheaper (due to not having a workshop, etc) and recommended by a mate. He was happy to fabricate the panels needed from sheet metal, but if you were going down this route there are panels now readily available. These are a couple of suggestions:

The advantage to you of a mobile welder is that if your car is a non-runner the work is done on your drive. This was perfect for me, as it meant I could fix other bits while he wasn't there.

Just a thought :D

On the price front, I've paid £250 so far for some extensive work to the rear of both sills including new metal up to the top of the body kit, new seams at the jacking points, and a plate on the underside at the front of one side...

Remember you have 2 options:

(1) get it through the MOT - only needs to be sound within a certain distance (someone will know this... :-k ) of suspension mounting points and a few other key bits. this can be done with little concern for appearance and is probably quite cheap...

(2) if you want prettty too, you get into respraying into the existing panels to blend the colour, and can start to get quite expensive.

The MOT thing is within 30cm on any suspension mount.

I paid £1200 for rear arches, sill returns and rear lower corners to be fitted along with some repair work on the inner wings and rear panel under the bumper.
This price did include a respray of the new fitted parts with blending in painting and rust proofing all round but not the price of the panels.
These I bought from littlebird on ebay, £250 for all 6 panels I think.

OUCH OUCH OUCH, but worth every penny I think. :-k

Done in Norfolk so not near you, sorry

Bod.
