Everyone I know who has removed them have used a useful tool called a "TwoBrutal Spanner". These can be purchased at any decent tool store in the grinder section!

Its usual to replace them rather then reusing since they just rust and sieze and the design with the allen key centre is a pain in the proverbial.

I couldn't use the TwoBrutal Spanner, so instead used penetrating spray. Lots of it. And some heat. It also cost me an allen key. It is possible, but not easy!

Stubborn bolts

Post by aw11rally »

Use a bigger hammer!

Giving the bolts a good bashing may free them up a bit, also there is heat and/or WD40.

OR.....Give me a lever long enough and I will move the earth!

GOOD LUCK

If you're feeling physical, a nut splitter and a chisel can work wonders

Dont these have an allen key nut you have to hold and then undo with the spanner?

Yes but they resemble 2000 year old tree bark and stopped being a functional allen keyway sometime around 1990.

I cheated when fitting my konis, i just cut the drop link in half then welded them back together again. I have a full new set to go back on but havent got round to doing it.

I used a hacksaw to cut my nuts in half....

Then I tackled the drop-links.

I put a set of mole grips on tightly on the back and used a normal ratchet on the nuts.

I used the hacksaw through the nut solution before I bought a grinder. I found both methods work well.
I also bend the bracket on the leg first using the chisel method.
It's amazing how quick you learn by your mistakes. :pale:

You can run without the droplinks and it won't really damage your car or cause any problems. SO if you not got spares straight away you can replace in due course

ive never failed to get a droplink undone with the method that i use, and they have always been reuseable afterwards!!

spray lots of penetrating oil on the nut beforehand.

then take the apropriately sized allen key, and a spanner that you dont mind beating with a hammer. place the spanner on the nut, and insert the allen key. rotate the spanner and nut until the allen key is wedged against something (usually the strut or chassis). move the spanner so that you can get a clean hit at it with the hammer to undo the nut. then hit the end of the spanner very hard to impact it.

a few sharp blasts and the nut usually frees off enough to undo by hand. and as said, it hasnt failed me yet.

Replacing

Post by ulysess1966 »

Another good reason to replace the Toyota drop links with modified Ford ones or something like that because the replacements won't use the dodgy Allen key method.
