[Mk2] [Turbo] 4th gear slipping

Post by marshiboi »

Hi all,

I'm fairly new to the world of MR2 and wondered if anyone could help.

I have recently noticed that 4th gear is very resistant when engaging and feels like it catches when it goes in.

Now when the car is under load it pops/slips out when you try to engage it.

No other gears exhibit these problems so I'm not thinking its a syncro problem but rather something to do with the shift linkages.

Cheers

sounds like the clutch is on it's way out, mine had the same symptoms, it gradually got worse, then eventually couldn't select any gears :-k

A warn clutch wouldn’t make it pop out of gear though :-k , it would make it hard to get into gear though if the shock springs in the clutch plate were warn then all gears would be hard to select, Sounds more like a syncro ring to me :( especially if it’s popping out under load, quite common on the 2 if it's had a lot of raggin I’m afraid, just when I bought my 2 I had the same problem with 3rd gear, 2nd to 3rd was a nightmare especially when shifting at high revs as it just wouldn’t go in, I replaced the box oil and added some Wynn’s gear treatment to it, about 5 k later with easy driving it sorted it out.....feckin lucky!!  :D

it’s worth noting that if you have to much oil in the gearbox shifting in some gears will be quite hard because of the excess oil the synros have to work twice as hard to bring the main shaft down to a standstill before the syncro can lock so that the selector can fit it self over the gear your selecting the excess oil is moving parts that shouldn’t be moving between gear selection, so it makes it hard :(

You can try replacing the gear oil and putting in an additive like wynns gear treatment, it worked for me

If you think the clutch is slipping then take the 2 out and once you’re in 5th come down to 2k revs then floor it, if it's slipping the rev counter with increase rapidly but your pretty much doing the same speed

It may be the cable bushes at the gearbox. Get someone to put the car into gear with the engine off and look to see if there is any play in the two bushes.
