[Mk2] [Generic] US clear indicators??

Post by Ste2 »

Hello..... Hoping someone can help me!!

...from searching the net I have half got the impression that there are OEM (US) clear front indicators that do not have the side light 'segment' in them.

Is this true? If so, whats the part number and where can these be had?!

At the moment, I hardly ever use the side lights and I am thinking of getting the Rogue Quads.

Seeing as chipped my current indicators in an incident at anglsey last october (ahem) I would also like some OEM looking clear fronts. If they do them without the side light, this would be purfect! :thumleft:

Oh - and, I assume this is legal? as I can use quads as side lights yes? and this will pass MOT?

Apologies if this has been posted before...

Cheers.

I think no side lights would be an MOT fail. rogue quads would only pop up on 2nd click leaving you with no lights on first click, instant fail.

What he said.

Also, to be pedantic, if the US-spec front lights aren't E-marked it can be a fail.

Why would anybody not want sidelights? :-k

Thanks for the replys guys

Si_Crewe - I think the side lights look a little odd on the mr2, I would much prefer to integrate them into the pop-ups. I guess its just the 'mod bug' eating at me again.

Surely you can wire the rouges to pop-up on the first click? But I guess you probably need distinct - side-lights > dipped lights > full beams?? and I assume the rouges are only capable of dipped and full...

Or perhaps - thinkning about it - have the side lights turn on on the first click but off on the second click - that should pass MOT but kill them when the pop-ups are on!!! :-k thats what I would ideally prefer.

Still would like to know about the US clears though. Do they have side lights? :-s

American spec clear sidelights dont have the seperator between the light and the indicator ,so the whole of the light lights up ,

when you buy them you need to cut out the hole to fit your sidelights, which you will need for MOT ,(unless you fit sidelights somewhere else)

this is the type with the seperator

this is the type without

This is one with the seperator that ive swapped the indicator with the sidelight

and this is one i took to bits, removed the seperator ,and fitted led strips

you can get headlights with the sidelight built in, my mate has a 95 hilux and the headlights are the same apart from a hole where the sidelights go

Thinking about it, this might actually be quite straightforward... MIGHT be.

Basically, I'm thinking that you might be able to swap the wiring around on the stalk to make this work.
You'd need to find the wire on the stalk that goes live when the sidelights come on and the wire on the stalk that goes live when the headlights come on (and pop up) and then swap those 2 wires around.

THAT would mean that, on the first click, the headlights would pop up & come on then, on the next click, the sidelights would come on.

Okay, that's not good but it's not the end of the world.
Since you want your sidelights built into the headlights you're gonna need to move the feeds for the sidelights into the headlamp pods anyway.

Bearing in mind that, after swapping the wires around in the stalk, you've got headlights raising and coming on with the first click and then sidelights coming on with the 2nd click, you should just be able to fit small 25w bulbs to the wires that SHOULD power the headlights and then hook the headlights up to the wiring from the sidelights (after changing fuses and checking all the wiring is suitable etc).

Does that make sense?

Course, you still need to find somewhere to actually have the new sidelights actually shining out of.

I think this might be your biggest challenge.
On most headlights the sidelight is a seperate bulb fitted next to the headlight bulb which causes the reflector to light dimly.
I don't think there's going to be any way to achieve that with the Rogue quad lights.

I dunno if you can get standard headlight bulbs that have a 25w filament and a 55w filament built into them.
I suppose, if not, you might consider using a dual filament headlight bulb and then fitting a high wattage resistor to what should be the main-beam filament so it only glows dimly.

I dunno.
This has the potential to be a total bodge-up if you don't plan it properly and, at best, it's only going to be the sort of thing that an MR2 geek would notice.

Hey mate,

The USDM front indicators were only available in amber. Every white one is an imported european part. (I'm talking about the Toyota parts, not the crystal clear indicators ;)

I have the USDM front indicators and I can tell you that there's almost no difference in the illumination level but you can't see the little plastic bar which divides the two compartments.

If you want the US style just install a two-phase socket into the indicator compartment, it'll look almost the same.

Cheers
