[Mk2] [Generic] Where to put the amp?

Post by Peter C »

At the moment I have the amp fitted under the frunk, however the install is not ideal as the amp is not securely fixed (to maintain access to the spare wheel) and for the past two weeks the amp has been covered with a blanket to insulate it from the -5'C temperatures.

Where to put the amp?

I have a pair of 10" subs in enclosures behind the seats.

I need the rear boot space - for baby pram, shopping ,etc.

It won't fit under the seats.

I don't have the exact dims but it is approx 400mm x 400mm by 120mm thick.

Any clever ideas?

You are a bit stuck for space in the '2 to be honest.

If your car doesn't have aircon there may well be some space behind the glovebox. However IIRC the heater matrix is pretty big regardless of aircon or not.

You could lose a sub and put it in a box behind one of the seats... I find 2x10" subs a bit overkill in the '2 but then again mine are about 1200RMS.

Ditch the 2x10" subs and just stick a single 12" behind the passenger seat. I'm running a JBL 12" off a 350W RMS amp and its ample for the size of the cabin :thumleft:

I went from two 10"s to a single Kicker L5 (a square 10" sub is equivalent to a round 12")

With this in the car we recorded 128.6 db @ 46hz (2 x 125w) it is a dual 4ohm voice coil model which I am in the process of changing to a 2ohm L5 in a custom box.

I like my two tens and they sound perfect - punchy, loud and crisp.

My car has (fully working) air con, so the dash idea is no good.

Looks like my amp is staying put.

Cheers fellas.

Have you considered replacing the Amp with something 'Shorter' ??

You have 55mm Max of room under a seat (and frankly at 50mm the top would get scratched without some protection)

Old-School Phoenix Gold M series (M25 / 50 / 44) will fit easily (50mm)

and Ebay is full of super-low profile Genesis 'Profile' series for not a lot of dosh.

how far do you have your seat or passenger seat back as you can make an amp rack and position it there, or make half a false floor in passengerside and mount it under there.

there are alot of options i install audio as whats now a hobby but was professinal at one point building installs to compete in db drag serise, how ever having kids put dramatic drain on my income so had to go back to secure work with regular wage

meybe try mounting it on the floor in the boot and make a false floor to go over it, then you would still have plenty of space for storage.
