If you had 5k how would you tune your MR2
If you were lucky enough to have 5K burning a hole in your pocket, how would you spend it on your MR2?
Re: If you had 5k how would you tune your MR2
Tbh you would only be getting half the job done, there is not much point getting a bigger turbo (2k) , fuel pump, injectors, clutch, ecu, mapping etc... when the engine would just go ka-boom and vice versa,ie.forging the engine and running a standard turbo etc.
probably be best to sell up and buy one already modified,
Unless of course you could pick up a nice second hand fully built engine and maybe a second hand turbo kit

Re: If you had 5k how would you tune your MR2
yeah, would cost more than 5K to do it properly
Re: If you had 5k how would you tune your MR2
bit of an odd question... if i had 5k i wouldnt be thinking how can i spend it on my car..
if theres something you really want go buy it.
id personally spend it on paying some of my morgage off. or my credit cards.
make a list of the things you want done to your car and post it up. im sure we can give you rough prices .

as above.
however, if I had 5k right now it would stay in the bank.

Re: If you had 5k how would you tune your MR2
Sell it and buy one thats already done from JM-Imports or another very good importer.
Re: If you had 5k how would you tune your MR2
Gotta be a V6 engine swap with supercharger + a full respray to make it shiny and new again.
Re: If you had 5k how would you tune your MR2
If I had a low mileage rev3+ tubby as a base to start from...
Add
- full service
- st205 charge cooler
- air filter
- free flowing exhaust and decat
- boost controller and BOV
- fully stripped out interior
- perspex windows
- remove a/c
- coilovers
- camber adjustment
- poly bushes
- 16 inch staggered lightweight wheels
- R888s
- braided brake lines
- adjustable ARBs
- carbotech brake pads
- under wing braces
- strut braces
- carbon fibre bonnet
- glass fibre wings, doors and wing mirrors
- full roll cage
- nice bucket seats and harnesses
Not sure if £5k would cover that, if there was any left I'd be looking at further engine/ drivetrain mods- maybe a lightweight flywheel or tweaked gear ratios, or even a piggy back/ programmable ecu, but I think that exceeds the spend limit!

Re: If you had 5k how would you tune your MR2
ok, maybe i need to rephrase that question. I have a 92 mr2 turbo, and the engine is in need of some tlc. its starting to sound very rattly and noisy and smokey at times too. The body work is pretty much perfect as it has a full border kit fitted and had a full respray last year. The engine was replaced last year also as the bottom end went on the original. I want to know wots teh best way to spend 5K to get it sounding good, and reliable again
Re: If you had 5k how would you tune your MR2
As said above mate keep the money in the bank these are bad times to be splashing that sort of money on upgrading an engine.
Leon is selling a rev4 turbo engine in the for sale section. Around 2.5K should see this bought and fitted in your car.
You'd only be spending half of your nest egg then

yeah, me too. I wouldn't spend 5 grand on my engine, much better things I could think of with that money
Re: If you had 5k how would you tune your MR2
So out of interest if it were to be done how much would it run to to for the whole package?
forged engine
turbo kit
ecu / mapping
uprated cooling
uprated clutch
uprated braking system etc etc
labour costs (inc snags along the way)
probably looking around 8k? and what would the end result be? a hi-power straight line drag car that still wouldnt boost round corners.

I totaly agree but being honest there are not many cars that can hit 100mph in 7 or 8 seconds and allow full boost into corners, not with our national speed limits anyway

Come on guys, he asked a question about how to tune his car with a certain sum of cash. I didnt see him ask for financial or crdit advice!
....so 5k? what bolt-ons have you got on the engine at the mo? If youre confident in the long block I'd got nuts on bolts ons.
Standalone ECU installed and setup £1200
Induction kit £140
Exhaust £500
Downpipe £160
Fuel pump £150
Turbo £1500
Colder plugs £50
Injectors £320
Chargecooler £600
that will leave £400ish set aside for labour regarding the jobs you can't boltup yourself adn of course some beer money!!!!
That lot should out a smile on your face!!!!!!! If you did it in one go, it'd probably put you into a hedge!!!!

Alarm and Immobiliser.
New tyres.
New brakes + cylinders
New Cam Belt and Wpump.
New clutch
New ball joints and droplinks.
New springs and top mounts
New poly bushes.
4 wheel alignment
Full service
New ignition components
Thermostat and coolant + oils and filters. oem air filter.
New Exhaust with decat
New wiper blades
Tbar seals.
Maybe a little bodywork for the odd scratch.
Seats retrimmed
Brass gear bushes
Rhon leather gaitor ( the finest ).
Stereo and speakers
In car hd video solid state recorder and camera
If you have a rev3 then you'll be getting about 240hp, this coupled with nice brakes and tyres, and a car thats well maintained is enough for me.
Then once the car is in this state, just enjoy it, and clean it.
Cost less than 5k and worth every penny. See how much you have left then do the pilgrimage to the Nur.
This is my plan!

Re: If you had 5k how would you tune your MR2
I would put it towards a car thats already modded. Loads of Hi Spec 450+ BHP MR2's going for £5k - £7.5k now that have had £10k - £15k+ spent on them..
Re: If you had 5k how would you tune your MR2
If I had that cash lying around for my MR2 I'd...
Fit my ITB;s (already got them but will cost circa £2.5 -3k to get them fitted and mapped properly)
Spend about £1k tidying bodywork
...travel to / from mappers would cost circa £500 as I can't pass it off via business in that area any more
Of course if I had 5k I'd think about allot of things but this is what I'd do to my MR2 I think if I had it straight off with no other commitments. Otherwise I'd say my MR2 is pretty much dang near where I want it for what I've done at the moment!

Re: If you had 5k how would you tune your MR2
How about....
Step 1:
Get the engine running well again - full service, cam belt, coolant etc
Step 2:
Basic bolt on mods including, Intercooler, MBC, FCD, External air filter, Boost gauge, Downpipe, 3" stainless exhaust, CT20b Turbo - increase boost to 16psi
Step 3:
Nitrous Oxide - ok it doesn't last long but will give you a good increase of power!
Personally i wouldn't bother with the whole standalone ECU as its really expensive (great to do mind..) but only if you're wanting to take your motor to the next level in how much BHP you want from it.. and to get to that dream will = a lot of extra cash!
The Nos will give you that dream but in short bursts and will cost you MUCH less!
Please don't shoot me down for suggesting NOS!!!!
HTH!
