Anyone want to become a Racing Driver?

Post by Rogue »

Hi All,

As formula official for the MR2 Championship and MR2 Super GT series I'm quite often the first point of contact for people starting out in circuit racing. To that end, I'm looking to put together a group of MR2 owners who are interested in taking their ARDS test and qualifying for a National B Race License.

Typically the course is held over a half day or a day and broken down into theory and practical tuition, followed by exams. You'll be taught how to find the racing line and identify entry, apex and exit points as well as general safety, flag colours and race day procedures.

An ARDS course normally runs at a cost of £300 - £400 depending upon the circuit and the type of cars they use. If I can get a group of five or more people together then I'll see what I can arrange in terms of a group discount. You'll also need to order a "Go Racing" pack from the MSA which includes an instructional DVD, MSA Yearbook (Blue Book) and your license application. You won't need to have your own helmet or race suit for the ARDS test.

If you're interested, please let me know on this thread and indicate if you have a preference for a particular circuit.

Best regards,

What a brilliant idea, but don't go to Silverstone.

How long is the license valid for?

I highly doubt I'd do anything competitive next year, but potentially the year after I might.

I'm well up for this- great idea :thumleft:

If I had my choice I'd say Anglesey, but I know it's a long way out of most people's way so would happily go wherever the majority vote takes us :D

Would this be in our own cars? And would it be limited to MR2 owners- I know Mike wants to take his ARDs test too...?

Hi Patrick, i'd be up for this. Let me know more details when possible. PS: easy on which track, however if Cadwell or Donny is possible i'm quite local to these 8)

I'm interested Patrick :)

Cadwell or bedford for me preferably. I have seen on the MSV site you can get an ARDS test for £225 (no including the go race pack)

Would you be getting it cheaper than this?

Cheers

Okay, I've just been on the phone with MSV and they're more than happy to accommodate us and if I can get 10+ people we're into discount territory. :)

How it works:

- Once we've selected a venue, we book into an open pit lane trackday.
- You take part in the trackday in your own car - make sure it has a passenger seat!
- MSV supply an instructor for a session to make sure that you understand what you need to show when you're driving for your test. If they don't think you're likely to pass they can offer you further tuition.
- Once you've had your tuition you'll be able to take your practical test.
- The theory test will be held in the afternoon once you've watched an instructional video.

So Cadwell Park trackday + tuition + ARDS test = £109 + £25 + £225 = £359. Assuming 10+ people this should cost around £300. We also have the option of getting a GP along to sort out the medicals which will probably be cheaper than getting it done with your local doctor. I will find out about this when I have a clearer idea of numbers.

Anyone is welcome to come along to this, and I've advertised the event on other MR2 forums. You can also come along and just do the trackday if you want.

From the point of view of taking your test, Cadwell is an awesome drive but is also one of the most technically demanding (and longest) tracks in the country! It is also the cheapest for our requirements and the basis for the above costs...

I'd suggest one of the following:

Saturday 23rd January - Bedford Autodrome GT Circuit (£355)

Saturday 23rd January - Cadwell Park Circuit (£300)

Saturday 30th January - Snetterton Circuit (£355)

Please add your details to the list below:

1. Phillip Plastow - Cadwell Park - ARDS

That is so cheap!! It cost me that just for one day doing the test (about half an hour of driving) and I still had to pay my GP £125 for a medical!!
/sick

I might come along for the trackday.
