Roof mounted cycle carrier

Post by Paul in the Port »

Has anyone used a roof rack and cycle carrier on their Mk1 at all? I am looking at the Thule roof rack (Thule 951 feet fit according to their fitment guide) which obviously means they will be pretty close together but am hoping i can still carry a mountain bike on a rack such as....

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stor ... yId_165515

Alternatively, i'll need to look for a rear mounted carrier that will fit with the spoiler there, and that will also fit my full suspension bike as there isnt much room in the frame with the rear suspension there.

Anyone done it at all??

I've got a Halfords 3 bike high mount rack that fits perfectly on the back of a mk1. I regularly use it to carry my Cannondale DH bike around, though it won't work with all designs of full suspension bikes. I have to remove the front wheel to stop it hitting the spoiler (or pad the spoiler with pipe lagging).

I have a rack similar to James above, and trial fitted it to our old SC. But the tollerences were too close for comfort and I was worried about the amount of drag caused by the bike at speed (worried it would rip the bike & rack off the car causing additional damage.

I also personally don't like the bikes resting against the rack as it scuffs the powder-coat. Although I use old socks or foam in between touching parts to reduce the amount of scuffing.

So I reverted back to putting the rack on my Galant and more recently BMW - much, much safer :thumleft:

I've padded the rack with pipe lagging so it doesn't mark the bike where it rests against it, i also don't have any paint on either of my bikes so it doesn't really matter anyway!!

I use my rack just about every weekend, it'll quite happily sit at 70+mph, i don't notice any drag and it's always completely solid. Though my rack does sit at more of an angle over the engine cover so might be less susceptible to wind/drag/etc.
