[All] [Generic] what head unit

Post by afennell »

Hi,
I’m looking at getting a new head unit, i want one with satnav, hands free and ipod connectivity.
The kenwood DNX5220
http://www.justkenwood.co.uk/stock01/dnx5220.asp
seems great value for money with great features. The only thing that worries me is the security aspect of having a double din screen constantly on display.
Has anyone experienced any problems?
The other option is one with a motorised screen, this would also be future proof for future cars. (not all cars have the double din slot)
Can anyone suggest any Alpine or similar ( no china or un known makes please) model to look at.

IIRC RichardK wrote a review on a previous model Kenwood double din unit (maybe an 8019?). I'm looking to get one as well, there's a supplier on eBay in the states who supplies Kenwood factory refurbished units unlocked & with the band expansion done.

Edit: Don't buy from JustKenwood, their prices are about 15% higher than places Car Audio Direct or Car Audio & Security.

If it's of any relevance I have a massive obvious stereo (it's silver, double din and flashes even when its off) and no one's ever nicked it - I'd have thought something that blended into the dash well like a black screen would attract less attention.

Thanks for the comments, I would try to buy locally and get them to match internet prices.
I’m sure it would be fine the car is in my garage through the week, I just think i maybe worried about it while in the cinema or parked up on the high street

This is what I used to have (Alpine) Great package the Bluetooth exceptionally good. You have to buy your own iPod cable but then it has full speed control and charges your iPod too! (Some models not supported)

Worth a look.

S'not 2DIN though is it... if you've got the space in the dash you should make use of it IMHO!

This is what I'm after, or something similar:

As few buttons as possible and as much screen as possible :thumleft:
