[Mk2] [NA] 5th clutch in a year??

Post by axgizmo »

1991, N/A, Rev1, MR2: owned by me for 1 year then sold to my BF who has had it for 8 months

Clutch 1: When i bought the car i was on here saying about a rubbing noise - My clutch eventually ripped into 8 pieces & was replaced by my dad & his mechanic friend, Car was fine until earlier this year.

Clutch2: My boyfriend bought the car and after a couple of months the clutch ripped into 7 pieces, he was jobless at the time so he fitted a second had one until he got another job.

Clutch 3: BF was pulling off the motorway onto the services and as he was passing through the services clutch went again (brand new clutch, was in for 1 month) This time the clutch had been ripped in 2, The centre of the clutch was seperate from the rest. Whilst he had the car in bits he noticed the gearbox wasnt sitting right, Some bolts were missing, He sorted this & fitted a new clutch.

Clutch 4: I got a phone call saturday morning from my fella who was stuck on the back roads behind my house as his clutch has gone... AGAIN! We've not taken the car to bits this time.

So now we have a broken MR2 which clearly has issues - He's lost patience with it so i am going to take it to a garage to have it looked at, I love the car to bits & dont want to see it scrapped.

Anyone with a better Mechanical mind that me like to share their views? As i say it will be going into the garage but i get the feeling that gearbox hanging off may have done some damage to cause the clutch issues??

So were any of the clutches genuine Toyota and new, could have been slightly out of alignment when fitting, or even a warped flywheel, if done correctly and using a genuine Toyota part you should see 70k miles, more in some cases...

Erm im not sure, They were £70 each I know that much his mechanic friend got them on trade,
Not sure on the make but they didnt come from Toyota garage

He's had enough of it not & im not sure whether to fix it myself & use it as a work horse or just give it up as a bad job, It's got a few little bits like Full stainless, Clear indicators, LED sid repeaters, brace etc so i dont wanna scrap it & he wants nothing more to do with the car so he wont break it :( dunno what to do

You get what you pay for and for £70 you will not get a very good clutch. There are also 3 parts to a clutch, were all parts changed?

You need to take it to a garage that knows about MR2s and get a Toyota clutch fitted then you will have a warranty on the parts and labour.

Clutches are meant to last 60K usually, so that would dictate that you have a problem..

Like everyone else says, if the job is half done with crap parts, you get what you pay for.
