[Mk2] [Turbo] Removing stereo, checking wiring and fitting an aerial

Post by bluesmoke »

Originally posted the aerial part in Electrical by mistake: Hi guys. I saw A while back that someone had replaced their aerial with a glass mountable unit that they had then put in behind the centre panel of their rear lights. Two questions: 1. How do I remove the centre panel on my Rev 2 and can I feed wires through into the boot? 2. This aerial only has 1 wire for a 12v feed, so how would I connect it to the existing wiring, which has 3? I'd want to wire it up to the always on 12v wire. I've also got a head unit to wire up. The car already has a single din Alpine unit fitted but I'm unsure about how it comes out of the dash. My subs don't seem to do much so I want to find out if everything is meant to just connect via ISO cable, or if I can connect directly to the round speaker and sub connectors on the back of the stereo?

Use paragraphs! It's a lot to take in at once.

Firstly, 3 wires... no idea! Sorry.

Centre panel can be removed easily, there are four 10mm bolts ( I think that size) hidden in the boot, easy to spot when you look in.

You might need to remove the lights, again, easy, pop off the reflectors undo screws and undo screws that attach light near the boot seal.

You may find you have the premium sound system which is pre amped so you will need to wire it up to the phono outputs or re-wire the speakers so they by pass the amps.

The subs generally ain't too hot. People either put aftermarket 6x9s there or one sub behind the passenger seat.

Have a trawl through this section there's hundreds of topics covering what you need to know, helps to save each page to your favs for future ref :)

Cheers matey. I'm posting from my phone, so it's not very paragraph friendly. When you say wire up to the phonos, are you meaning the speaker connectors on the head unit? Also, if the current gear is on an ISO connection, none of that stuff will be hooked up will it?

Its all hit and miss information until you've had a look at the wiring im affraid!

I find it best to start again on most things with always better results.

Try and get some pics of the stereo harness wiring, you'll soon see if its been bodged to the phono cables or not :thumleft:

Will do.

Just one thing - do you still have to pop the dash out to remove an aftermarket single DIN head unit, or is that just for the OEM stuff??

iirc, it has to come out. Its only a few screws. Once its been in and out a few times it takes seconds :thumleft:

Just take car over the hazzard switch and fag lighter, your indicators won't work if the haz are not connected.

You'll find that you can't get to the frame mounts without taking it off :D
