No gears at 6:30 am - Car fine the day before

Post by Blacklightning66 »

Went to leave for work thismorning, jumped in as normal, engine humming, clutch down and unable to select any gears.

Engine off - Gears selectable with clutch in or out ??

engine back on

No gears.

So off back into the house, boil the kettel, with boiling kettle in hand go back out to the car and proceed to pour 2 liters of boiling water onto the gearbox casing.

Back into car , engine on , all gears now selectable!

I got the car off the drive and Jumped in ol'trusty AKA my Mk2 Golf Gti and went to work.

any ideas?
I did fiddle around with my clutch pedel and biting point a few weeks ago but that has been fine.

Gearbox oil low?
Goosed gearbox? (dont make sence as it goes into gears when off and once I had heated it up with boiling water on the casing)
Clutch adjustment? :?:

Im guessing due to the cold weather now the clutch fluid will be cold which = less pressure than when its warm if you know what I mean.

Check you Clutch fluid, maybe its time to change it?

Oh and try setting your clutch pedal back to what it was and see what happens.

If nothing sorts it then sounds like it could be new clutch time

Why did you fiddle with your clutch pedal? Was the biting point to low?

If this was the case then your Clutch hydraulic system is at fault. This causes difficulty when changing gears as the clutch isn't disengaging correctly.

Check the following::

(i) the clutch fluid levels OK?
(ii) any signs of weeping around the slave cylinder on the bell housing?

If both of the above are clear then you probably have failed seals in the master cylinder causing fluid 'by-pass' when you press the pedal.

If the biting point was too high then it's likely to be a faulty clutch. That said, I can't see why worn friction surfaces would prevent you from engaging the gears???

Biting point was too low which is why , I fiddled with the pedel adjustment, looks like I have a leak in the clutch system which Im going to tackle On Friday as I have a day off. Should have done the easy thing first and check the clutch fluid, was below Min!

Ive always had a low Biting point, Clutch and Gearbox were changed 3 years ago and the car has only done max 12K in those years at normal power levels so Im hoping its just the SLave Cylinder thats given up.

I'll do a full bleed and change of fluid first as thats the simplest option.

Cheers guys for your time!
