[Mk2] [Turbo] Opinion needed on quote for aftermarket ECU wiring and mapping

Post by Yas »

Hey people just want your thoughts on this.

The ECU in question is a HKS f-con v pro and i've been billed for hardwiring the fcon into the MR2 (the standard ecu will be ditched and the fcon will take full control)

Now this is how the bill goes:

Part needed- Fcon universal harness £60+vat

Then the labour...

Wire in fcon, put settings on ecu to enable the car to start £1500+vat
put running in map on.. upto 4500rpm £500+vat
once run-in he reckons about 6-8 hours for final mapping at £100+vat an hour

Start to finish he has estimated mapping to take around 12 hours(£1200+vat) to do "properly" apparantly other tuners charge a set price and don't map properly

I'll give more details on this later...

Sorry just to add I was told it would be 6 hours labour to wire the car up which ended up as 31 hours. I gave the thumbs up @6 hours labour but what i've been billed I think is a joke.

Thoughts below please.

Yas, bloody hell!

I would be outer there!!

Rewiring, sure can take some time, few hours maybe on an ecu like that. But 31! Jeeeez!

But mapping, you should be able to go straight from base map to huge hp in a mapping of 2-3hours or less!

Ryan at 2bar tuning can go from base map to 500-600hp on the supras within a couple of hours, same with mr2s, and I've not heard a bad word yet on his mapping skills!! And no dead cars!!

You seriously talkng about 3k+ for rewiring and map?
PLUS you've prob pay 1-1.5k for that ecu?

Seems like an absolute joke to
me. They quote 6hours, you pay 6 hours.
Surely the car should fire striaght up and have some sort of base map for you to drive on it's own, no real map to do or put on???
At this point. I'd be leaving! As you obviously can't go elsewhere unless you trailer it.
12hours mapping!!!! At 115 per hour!

Absolute BS!

In contrast, I bought a Apexi Power FC with everything including commander for about £650 with shipping, got it mapped by Ryan @ 2Bartuning for £330.

Does sound a very expensive deal!

You need to do whatever you can to get the car from the premesis. They could hit you with a bill much bigger than you're expecting. They know the score and they know you don't.

I had a friend lose approx £20k on a cosworth after he was screwed.

GET THE CAR OFF THE PREMESIS.

OTHERWISE YOU ARE SCREWED. Worst case they may not return your car.

BY ANY MEANS GET YOUR CAR FROM THE PREMESIS.

Thats about the size of it. A non plug in ECU should take all of 2-3hrs max to wire in, half a day at most.

That is one serious wee wee take!! Get your car back asap. Dave Rowe at EPS mapped my Motec in 5 dyno runs with a complete new set up! Took about an hour! This place is seriously taking the wee wee.

I wired my own M4 Pro in, took less than an hour.....

Pull the car was my first thought but it's not just the wiring the car was there for... bit of a long story this but in short it's been sat there from the end of 2006  for an engine build! Anyway thats a different story. I am willing to sort them out the money for the engine build as that is errm sort of what we had discussed.. well higher than what he had told me but i'm willing to knock that on the head, but the ecu side of things just takes the biscuit.

Having spoken to some other HKS dealers/powerwriters to get a quote for the same work I can confirm all there prices were around the 1k mark... which is wired and fully mapped :thumleft: I ran them through the bill I have and they were like wtf

From what I know and you guys seem to agree is.. mapping will NOT take 12 hours! I tried to speak to the mapper to make sense of all this and all I got was a load of bs how he maps them properly and other tuners don't, and how I don't know whats involved in the job blah blah blah...

I am not going to name the company just yet.. as mentioned I will give more details later.

Jim the HKS ecu's being universal don't come with a base map, but still I can't see it being that much of a big deal and i'm sure other mappers would agree.. this guys off his head.

I just need to find out where I stand legally on this as the work upto the running-in map has already been carried out. A quote for 6 hours becoming 31 hours is just a joke, if they had said ok it took us longer 8 hours 9 hours yeah ok I can believe that but over 5 times longer than the quote [-X

I poped into them for a recommendation / advice on ems for my setup.. the guy went on for about half an hour telling me what not to use then rambled on how he personally recommends this 'still a mystery ecu' as he uses them himself on his cars etc... finally he the got to the point and told me the name of the ecu, which did not surprise me at all when he said 'HKS FconV' As there a dealer and the only reason they all use them on there own cars is because they probally get them at trade price and dont pay for mapping!!

He quoted me somthing like £1500 for the hardware, then the wiring + day mapping he said will come to about another £1500.

3 fekkin grand!!

Cost me less than a grand in the end to get a 2nd hand LinkPlus G3,map sensor, p&p harness and get it mapped by Ryan.g On surrey dyno!!!

Surely the company is on shaky ground there if you only ok'd them 6 hours for mapping and they then went on to take 12hrs without confirming with you first. I don't see how they could force you to pay that?

No not TDI.

Kong they had told me mapping would be £500+vat which is about the normal set price for the fcons. 6 hours was for the wiring.
See I was expecting a bill for £575(mapping) 6 hours labour @ 50p/h +vat £345 = £920 and they want me to pay over 3k wtf!!

They way I look at it, if I was told 920 thats all i'm paying, I just needed a 2nd opinion on the situation.

Ryan.g doesn't map the f-con's.

Thanks for the replies guys.

If you are given a fixed price or time then that is a contract and you do not have to pay anymore, but if it was an estimate they gave you then they can charge you more but not as much as that amount.
The only problem I can see is that you will not get your car back till you have paid them.
