[Mk2] [Generic] Modifying the side lights - has this been done before?

Post by MrSix »

One thing that bugs me about the MR2 is how the pop up headlights ruin the lines of the car once they're up. I like to drive around with my side lights on until it becomes totally neccesary to use the full headlights. However the side lights aren't that bright and obviously only occupy a tiny portion of the front cluster.

I was wondering has anybody played around with the front lights to create a larger (apparent) side light and then moved the indicator to the edge?

I have converted my lights to have the indicators on the corners and Trev then put led strips along the top (R8 style) and bottom (indicators) even though I had already fitted led lights where the fogs used to be as my sidelights after consultation with my mot tester (I had tinted lights at the time)

How easy was it to convert the indicators to the outside and have the sidelights illuminate the whole front section?

It was easy just cut the bulb holder wires and swap them over then get an orange 501 side repeater bulb for the indicator (I used an led one and an led indicater relay, about £15 to get them to flash at the right speed as the std 382 indicater bulb is 21w and the 501 5w) . I have got spare looms which I could do ready if you want them ?

That would be great - would a single orange LED be bright enough for the indicators in the clear side lens?

Don't suppose you have any photos of the back of your cluster do you?

That first photo makes it look pretty bright - I presume thats an LED?
I'm definitely feeling my first suggestion still, the whole of the front illuminated with the side reflector working as the indicator.

A single orange led (or an orange 501 bulb) would be bright enough as I had orange 501 bulbs as indicators on my escort, I have got quad led 501 bulbs in mine.
The back of the cluster isnt changed in anyway it is just the wires changed on the bulb holders.
BLZ-8027 fitted the led strips in mine.
