[Mk2] [Generic] Advice on Components please ??

Post by gtech »

Looking at replacing the front speakers and tweeters I currently have (unknown brand).

Wanting to go 6.5" components and have see a few I like but unsure of the sound and quality, would like something with a good bass to it, and will be hooking it up to an amp.

The few I have been drawn to are:

VIBE Blackair 6.5"

# 16.5cm (6.5") 2-way components
# Ultra high quality woven Honeycomb fibreglass cone
# Multi-Installation options
# Tweeters can be used in a surface or flush mount applications
# High powered woofer and tweeter engineered to work harmony
# SPEEDBASS Polyurethane surround keeps the bass fast
# New VIBE angular torsion alloy cast basket
# 2 way 12 dB per octave passive crossover
# 120w RMS Power Handling
# 360w Max Power Handling
# Sensitivity: 90dB
# Frequency Response: 60 - 25,000Hz
# Impendence: 4ohm
# Mounting Depth: 62mm

and the

VIBE SEK60 V3 Kevlar

#115W RMS / 345W PEAK
#50W RMS Minimum Input
#90DB Sensitivity
#Frequency Response 50hz - 20khz
#VIBE Alloy angular torsion chassis with vented freeflow (TM) arms
#SpeedBass for extended low frequency
#Kevlar Composite Cone for superior response
#Multi Config - Component or Coaxial
#Silk Tweeter With Aluminium Cast Alloy Diaphragm
#Inline 12db Crossover Network

I am led to believe VIBE are a decent brand, yes there are loads more to choose from, but I felt that the price range of the above was about average, dont want to go overboard as I'm not in the car for that long really and could'nt justify going to a Pro level.

Any advice or recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks

I had the sek60's in mine, then took those out and put them in my vectra and put the blackair's in the mr2. To be honest. I couldnt tell any noticable difference. Might be better if the tweeters to the black airs lasted longer than 5 minutes!

In all honesty you wont get any decent bass out of the standard door enclosures, and to fit these speakers you will need to make up an mdf spacer at the very least. If you are handy, put something like dyna matt on the doors and do a custom air tight enclosure and run them off a recommended amp.

I have the vibe sek60's along with blaupunkt midrange in mine which have been in a long time and are still sounding good with very good bass response I recorded 128.6db two weeks ago. You do need to use the supplied crossovers when fitting (I am using kenwood 3way's) as toyota didnt fit components as standard they fitted tone up tweeters ie there is a capacitor on the oe tweeters so if you were to fit components to the toyota wiring without crossovers the tweeters wouldnt last long. You do need to amplify the components as the crossovers eat a lot of the power and headunit power isnt up to the job and wont sound as good, you will do more damage underpowering your speakers.

You need to make up wooden baffles to fit and trim the plastic inside the doortrim.
