Isnt doing just the fronts a bit dangerous? The rear end is quite swing-happy on an mr2, if the front is stopping dead and the rear isn't....

I have ran Brembo 4 pot calipers on the front for the last 5 years now and can say that they are one of the best mods i have carried out. I got my kit from Red Dot racing and they advised me that the stock rear calipers were more than sufficient. If they were upgraded the rear brake bias would be too powerful and cause more problems under heavy braking.

My car stops on a penny, in a straight line, and have never experienced any faults under heavy braking.

so you just ran std rears, no bias change?

None whatsover. Just larger discs with standard calipers. Have tested it many times braking hard from speed and the car stays straight and true until coming to a stop.

ah right so you ran larger rear discs using the std caliper.

Out of interest, what is the advantage of bigger disks without increasing pad surface area size? Ability to cool better over prolonged hard use?

And a greater leverage on the disk.

and the increased number of pistons = better modulation on the pedal.

We spent a lot of time with AP Racing working on a big brake upgrade kit for the MR2 mk2 and MR2 Roadster. They did a lot of testing with vehicles that we supplied, and with OE parts on their brake dyno. It's not just a simple case of choosing a disk diameter and the number of pistons on the caliper. It is possible to have a big brake kit that changes just the fronts and doesn't upset the rear bias too much, but you need to be sensible. Massive rotors and six pot calipers at the front and stock at the rear will almost certainly give you issues.

Next year we'll be introducing a racing series for modified MR2s and I'm very interested to see how the combination of stock disks, calipers and carbotech XP8 pads the we currently use on normally aspirated cars copes with the increased duty. I'm constantly getting spammed from a manufacturer in China that claims to be supplying World Touring Cars, but it's not a name I'm familiar with so I'm more than a little wary.

Same leverage unless you are moving the caliper?

Scott, where did you get your brembos from?

You'd have to move the caliper to fit a larger disc surely?

I'm surprised. All of the components apart from hub adapter were off the shelf, and most were shared with a kit for the Lotus Elise - one of their biggest sellers.
