[Mk2] [Turbo] Another ATS TD06 joins the 400BHP club =D (358.2WHP on a Dyno Dyna

Post by Kongaroo »

Well I finally got around to taking my car to the dyno to check whether the map I'd done on the road was actually any good or not

(Btw this is also an update to this thread: http://www.imoc.co.uk/forums/viewtopic. ... +3psi+td06 )

Anyway main differences between this time and last time are I'm now running GSC S1 cams and a larger methanol nozzle. I also made the switch to pure methanol injection instead of 50/50 with distilled water.

The other big difference is I took the car to a Dyno Dynamics dyno instead of a Dastek. The main reasons being that I couldn't find a Dastek close to me after the place I used last time closed down. Also I know that many people regard the Dasteks as reading higher WHP figures than the Dyno Dynamics so I thought it would be nice to see the difference for myself. I would still have liked to continue using the Dastek for comparative purposes.

Runs were done in Shootout mode with the pulls beginning at around 3000RPM.

Link to dyno charts:

1st chart is WHP and AFR
2nd chart is Flywheel BHP and Flywheel Torque.
Before I left the shop I requested a print out of wheel torque against WHP which is the 3rd chart.

Peak power figure was 358.2WHP which calculated to 419.9BHP at the flywheel. Peak Torque was about 312FtLbs which was about 368ftlbs at the flywheel. Peak boost was 21.2psi.

As I did this tune on the road I was pleased to see that up to 20.1psi boost no changes were really needed to the map and the car made a decent 345WHP at this boost with low knock levels (5th pull from the end).

The last 4 pulls were all at the same boost controller setting and were basically small adjustments to the fuel map as at this boost level I was beginning to get knock here. You can see I was still a bit lean at the end of the final run but as I was intending to increase the size of the methanol nozzle once again in the near future I decided not to push any further at this stage.

I'll come back for that final psi or so (and max out the stock MAP sensor) after my nozzle upgrade when I'll have a little more octane

Anyway I'm quite chuffed with the results. I think if I had unlimited funds I would like to try again with everything the same except without the upgraded cams as I'm not 100% convinced the results would be much worse power wise with just the JUN manifold and I would have a little bit less lag. Although I suspect my cam timing is still yet to be optimised so it's hard to say.

Final note - thanks to Peter and the SBITS team for putting the car together (and fixing it when bits fall off it  ). Also RS Tuning has a very nice setup there and the staff were friendly - recommended :thumleft:

Cheers Marty :D

A lot of fun - especially 2nd and 3rd. 1st gear is a real eye opener... even with the rev limit at 8000RPM it's over a little too quickly for my tastes. If only I could swap it out for something a little longer gearing wise it'd be perfect

Thanks guys - the car is indeed a hoot to drive - lots of power coupled with the traction from those chunky R888 285's - makes the drive into work something to look forward to \:D/

How addictive is this modifying though... I'd promised myself I would stop when the car broke 400BHP but then yesterday I found myself contemplating upgrading my MAP sensor... arrgh!!! Where will it end?

Another thing I've been noticing recently is with the age of our cars being what it is we are starting to realise the total lifespan of many of the parts. Things like the wheel bearings, clutch cylinder, cambelt tensioner and more recently the ABS sensors. At 16 years old they are all starting to give way slowly (especially with that extra power running through them too). Still on the positive side if I get another 16 years out of them I'll be a happy man

I bought mine from SBITs who can be found in the affiliates. Peter is a top guy, I'm sure he could point you in the right direction :D

Alternatively the company that actually makes the turbo kit is ATS racing:
http://atsracing.net/

Those guys are based in the USA and are also a great company. Hope that helps :thumleft:

That American site looks good. I didn't know there were that many tuning parts for the MR2. Thanks.

ATS Racing are one of the best shops available for mr2 tuning parts.

I bought my TD06 kit off them in 2004, I would always deal direct, sBITs is too unreliable and oyu get it cheaper buying direct.

I have had lots of parts over the years and they have never let me down and they are a shop thats there to stay aswell.

Cheers Dan - as a fellow TD06 owner you already know how much fun these turbos can be \:D/

I think it's easy to become desensitized to the power levels when you are modifying as it creeps up bit by bit. You end up forgetting just how fast 400BHP really is until you see just how much overtaking power you have over cars with 'only' 200-300BHP

Can't imagine what it'd be like in some of the 600BHP+ cars on here...

Btw did you get around to putting your car on the rollers again?

Agree that ATS is great - they give good advice too - check out some of the tuning information they've posted up on MR2OC.COM

SBITs is good too. They've been doing the work on my car for 4 years now and Peter's always helped me out when I'm in a bind. Maybe they could do with someone extra to help with answering calls and posting stuff out during those periods when they're doing an all nighter working on the cars. Peter - I'd offer to help, but my wife would kill me if I spent anymore time on car related pursuits... she's not as understanding as Carol
