Well that was fun! It all came apart like lego :D

Scary to see just how little metal there was underneath - I'm amazed the front suspension didn't just fall off  Sills gone, floorpan gone, suspension mounts gone... basically anything structural wasn't there. Complete lemon of a car :-:

Plenty of salvagable parts though, so more money to put into the black one which is the most solid MK1 I've ever driven 8-)

I'll be down again to help when I can :+:

New seats in mine are a lot better - I'm not sliding around in the corners like I was with the knackered leather ones :+:

Also, I can confirm that the 1a sub will bolt straight into the 1b. It makes a noticeable difference as well :)

This is a real shame as I have seen some of the work you have already put in. As said in my post in your project posting all of this is repairable, but you have to do it yourself otherwise its just not economically viable. I'm currently restoring my b and have done an awful lot of welding on it as well as stripping and rebuilding all the running gear.

I would not be too happy if I had been sold this car as it plainly wasn't road worthy at the last MOT. Who the hell repaires a floor with cardboard, milk bottles and tile adhesive and then what sort of garage passes it?

Still if there is one good thng come out of this is that you now know what to look for on Mk1's as far a rot goes although some top bodging does hide an awfull lot for a short time. Most of these cars are now very rotten and unless I saw photo evidence of repair work I wouldnt touch one with a barge pole as there is a good chance its been bodged. If you want to own one of these cars long term you need to learn to weld or have a bottomless pocket!

Hopefully bits of Murray will live on. I know I needed a car like Murray to rebuild mine, when its finshed the shell will go to the Mr2 heven as its about to fall to bits on my drive. Some work so far.............

[/img]http://i423.photobucket.com/albums/pp31 ... C00641.jpg[img

Its taken me 12 months so far to do the welding and rebuild the rear suspension. Lots more work to go, should be finished by next spring.

Good luck for future purchases.[/img]

I'm surprised it didn't drop through the axle stands. Stuff like this is my worst fear after my first MK1, which was a dog.

Well done for biting the bullet anyway and not selling a bad car on. Love those seats!

Perhaps we should insist on X-Rays when we sell club cars on?!

Really it's buyer beware. We all know the problems these cars can have with rust. A tiny bit peeping through could mean that much of your chassis is scattered the length of the country. You need to poke around and be confident that the car you're buying is worth what you're paying. I appreciate that the worst rust was hidden on this one, but ultimately you can always walk away from a car that doesn't feel "right".

Well I headed down to have some more fun with Murray today.

I set about the interior...
Image

And Pete started removing bits from the engine ready to drop it...

And then guess what we found! Yup, lots of holes and past bodges.

Rear quarter:
Image

Rotten arch:
Image

LOTS of holes in the floor...

Spot the face :)
Image

Then the passenger side:

And, worse, the driver side:

And then we have the "stress buster special" rear wings ;)

Image

Looking a bit forlorn:

The more we uncovered, the more rust we found :-: There have been some fairly serious bodges as well. That hole in the driver's floorpan was b odged together with cardboard and filler. One tap with a hammer and a 6" x 4" slab just dropped off

Not a car to have a crash in... :pale:

Plenty of decent parts have come off though. My achievent of the day was removing both rear quarter windows intact, and stripping the entire interior without snapping a single tab off :D

One of Pete's neighbours came and had a gander at it. He reckoned it had been parked by the sea at some point and the tide had come in  #-o

The thing that gets me is that most of the bigger holes had been bodged by someone - which means, somewhere down the line, somebody knowingly sold it like this

Makes the old trick of running a magnet over the bodywork seem a good peice of advice when buying a MK1 in future!

Easily defeated through a mix of metal filings in with the filler.
I am going to live forever, or die trying!
