Buying a AW11

Post by 128MB »

Hi, first of all sorry for any bad english cous i'm belgium ^^

I'm getting quite interested in these little rockets.
Now i hardly know anything about these cars aside from drooling at pictures.

What are the key points to look at when buying one? Like: rust under the wheel arches, cracks in the interior, ..

one thing i know of about pre '90s toyota's is that they rust.

i got my eye on a '85 1.6 with dark/beige two-tone paint and 4AGE motor. Is this a aw11a of aw11b?

thanks for your help guys/girls :thumleft: and if this is in the wrong subforum please move.

You're in the right place.

Do a search for "buying guide" it will have all the details you need.

Feeling generous, have a link.... ;)

The key points are rust, rust and rust. Sills, bottom of A-Pillars, Wheel arches, floorpan, bumper bars.... if it's metal it will rust. They need to be garaged and loved to survive well, or have had major restoration work done. I have no idea on prices in your part of the world, but it is worth spending a bit more to get a car with history and that has been well looked after, or one that has been loveingly restored.

Oh, and they're not exactly "rockets". They're great fun, but not the fastest thign around by some margin!

yeah i know rust :)

well is found a nice and tidy one with all the mayor 'wearing' components replaced like the brake pads, discs , master and slave cilinder, clutch disc and plateau(?), all fluids...mechanical tip top and a nice paintjob according to the pics. its just the rear wheel arches are loaded with rust, the rest of the chassis is in sparkling condition.

since i'm far from being a mecanic, i'd like to know HOW this rust is threated? do the arches need replacing or is it just some elbow grease? :p

The best way to keep the rust away from the rear arches is to replace them,
The panels can be had from ebay etc, Toyota did/do rear quarters but they are VERY  expensive and most dealers say that these can no longer be had but I think there may be the odd pair gathering dust in a toyota dealership somewhere.

There is a member on here called BIGBOBO who is also in Belgium, He might be able to help you a bit better due to Language differances etc but we will allways try to help also.

Oh and to answer your question an 85 car is a very early mk1a

isnt i possible to do the rust and threaten the car so it will never rust again?

As far a i know, metal only corrodes when exposed to air. With the paint on, how does it rust? Wear, age, salt, weather ?

cant the car be threated so it will never rust again? but i'm thinking here of a very expensive tear-apart and total respray if i'd want that :s

I dont know if it is worth buying a aw11 if rust is that a big problem.

The rear arches rust from the inside out. You will need to cut all of the old rust out and weld in new metal.. there are replacement bits available for these.

Rust is a major problem on Mk1's unfortunately . If you buy a rotten one, it wll cost you a lot of money and or time and patience to get right.

There are a coupe of active belgian Mk1 owners on the forum, I'll try and dig out their usernames for you :thumleft:

As far as I know the insides of the arches and sills were not treated particularly well on the Mk1 and the car wasn't galvanised. Add to that cheap italian steel and you have issues. #-o

At least they're not as bad as Cortinas of the 70s, my Dad bought one new and had a rust hole in the front wing after 2 years even though it was waxoyled.

A complete strip down and treatment with modern rust inhibitors would go a long way to improving the longevity of the cars but may be prohibitively expensive. I'd like to do it one day when I have a garage big and dry enough.

i'm getting more pics from the owner in the weekend, he even has 2 pots of the original paint \:D/ \:D/ \:D/

but the big deal is, is it worth the buy? i hardly even have space to put it :p
at first i was looking at some porsche 944's, but they dont look very cool, and i almost see one every day. only other 'cheap' fast cars i know is the 200sx for 3-4000 € or the bit more expensive eclipse or ae86 or integra

but i just like the looks, and im used to 68 diesel horsies in my vw caddy so i think a 1.6 petrol is gonna rock my world ^^

Bobo on here is also a Belgian MK1 Owner.

My other half is Belgian and has a MK1, but the MK1 stays here with me most of the time and he's over here a lot too.

Which part of Belgium are you in? Are you Flemish?

I definately recommend you should have one of these cars, even if for a short time just so you can experience them.
My girl is a MK1(b) Sunroof Model 1.6L

I'm a female MK1 driver.

yeah but lol i'm not going to put a this load of money in 'just' an aw11.

maybe years later IF i intend to buy one and i suspect i probably will cous i'm getting so excited like a 5yr old getting a super nintendo for xmas

i'm still e-mailing the guy who is selling the 2-tone aw11 and he says a new wing costs €500.

Now he's given me a tip to strole around junkyards to find a scrap aw11 and cut it out so the garage doesnt have to make its own plate to weld.

I have a question:

does anyone have a picture of the boot and bonnet release switch? :) IF i intend to look at one i'd like to flip them open like im a specialist \:D/

i'd also like high res pictures of a stock mk1a, especially the interior, i have googled for hours

edit

here some rusty pics from the one i'm looking at :s

That rust looks fairly well advanced to me. I'd be surprised if they are the only rusty patches on that car. They rot underneath too!

For bonnet/boot releases:
THe front bonnet releases on a catch under the dashboard. I don't know if it's on the left or right on european cars.
The rear Boot and fuel cover open on 2 releases on the floor beside the drivers seat.
The engine cover opens on a release just below rear window height on the bulkhead behind the seats. Check all the releases work and all the keys open the locks - it can be a pain to sort out if they don't.

200SX are barges. Way too soft.

AE86 are great but you will pay a premium as they are sought after. They are rust buckets, probably worse than the MR2.

Integra is great (i've got one) but again you will pay a lot more for one of these.

MK1 MR2 is great fun to drive, though it does have it's handling idiosyncrancies but that said when you get the meaure of it you can really exploit it. MK1 MR2s are cheap to buy but the parts are expensive, although there are plenty around. They don't have the exclusivity of say an AE86 or the focus of an Integra but that is not overly important I guess.
