[Mk2] [Generic] Where does the Rev Counter get its reading from?

Post by cantfindausername »

I've got a dead rev counter. I changed to a different unit and the needle came to rest at 0 ok, but its not reading anything. So there is power getting to the clock and the mechanism is ok, but there is no actual RPM signal for it to read. Any ideas anyone?

I think you can pick up an rpm signal off the check connector in the engine bay? Otherwise there is a pin on the ecu for it, i dont have the pinout to hand but it's in the BGB; http://www.mr2-tech.com/bgb.htm

The actual signal for the RPM comes from the igniter tho. HTH :)

Tried disconnecting / reconnecting :

Distributer connector
Igniter connector
Coil ( not the HT lead ) ??

Possibly a dry joint :-k

Don't run the ignitor no more and don't run the distributor no more either.

The ECU has an RPM out which is sumulating the pulsing earth from the ignitor. However, the plugs on the gauge cluster didn't match up with what was on the car apparently. So there is a signal at the dash, but potentially in the wrong place. I need to do some digging around on the car and see whats what.

Ant: The tach signal comes from the igniter, thats probably why its not working if you are no longer running it.

There are 2 signals available, the one going to the ecu is more precise than the one going to the dash.

On your setup im not sure how you will pick up a signal.

Hi mate,

The RPM signal wire is the black wire at the end of the third muti plug on the left when you remove your clocks, have you checked it with a mutimeter, ign on? at idle? and with the throttle applied to see the raise in volts

I need to check what is being set back to the dash from the ECU. Could be a while till I get a chance though so will just have to make do for now. Was mainy for the Rolling Road day that I wanted it set up. Will have to run a laptop instead if they need to see RPM.
